Jim Harbaugh announces interim coaches for first three games with unique twist

Michigan head football coach Jim Harbaugh will be suspended for the first three games of the 2023 season. Now, we know who will be handling the duties in his absence during non-conference play.

According to a press release from U-M Athletics on Thursday evening, Harbaugh has chosen four of his assistants to take turns leading the team on gameday in his absence. Defensive coordinator Jesse Minter will handle gameday duties in the Sept. 2 opener against East Carolina. The following week vs. UNLV, the game will be split between special teams coordinator/safeties coach Jay Harbaugh (first half) and running backs coach Mike Hart (second half).

Offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore will handle the team’s third and final non-conference contest against Bowling Green on Sept. 16. Harbaugh returns to the sideline on game day for the Sept. 23 home contest against Rutgers.

In addition to the coaching designations for the first three games, Michigan has added the title of Associate Head Coach to strength and conditioning coach Ben Herbert. Jack Harbaugh will continue in his role as Michigan’s Assistant Head Coach.

“I’m certain that all will be impressed with the four coaches’ ability to direct and manage the game,” said Harbaugh. “It’s been well documented that we have a very talented coaching staff and I believe that all 10 assistant coaches will be head coaches in the near future. They are all capable of leading a team at an elite level. I know that everyone will handle their responsibilities and help our players to be the best version of themselves on and off the field this fall and beyond.”

Michigan suspended Harbaugh for the first three games of the season as a self-induced penalty for his alleged role in recruiting violations by the NCAA. No word yet has been given as to whether further punishment is coming, and the saga is intended to go into 2024. Moore and tight ends coach Grant Newsome are expected to serve a one-game suspension in the season-opener.

The story is developing.
