Insider Report – are there flip candidates?

Insider Report – are there flip candidates?

While the Gamecocks currently have a top 20 class for the 2024 recruiting cycle, with some great players committed, there are plenty of remaining targets on the board.

That includes some prior misses for the staff. Are any of them still engaged with USC? Do some flip candidates exist for South Carolina? We give the latest in this edition.

— Sterling Lucas has one of the best EDGE prospects in the country committed in five-star Dylan Stewart.

The Gamecocks, of course, would like to add more at this position before the cycle is over.

One possibility that remains is Atlanta product Kam Fountain, who committed this summer to Southern Cal after taking an official visit out west. While Fountain has continued to say and display the right things about his pledge to the Trojans – he recently made a social media post advocating for Southern Cal to land five-star Eddrick Houston – information we have indicates that he’s still open to South Carolina.

Columbia is, of course, a lot closer to his Atlanta home. Fountain also has a strong relationship with Lucas, who’s been recruiting him for quite a while. The key here will be getting Fountain in for an official visit during the season, and that has been discussed.

If an OV ends up happening, things could heat up here.

Jalewis Solomon’s recruitment went absolutely down to the wire. After FSU and South Carolina traded the lead, Auburn arrived later to the party and made a huge push.

On the day of his pledge, every single sign pointed to the Gamecocks. Auburn made a big push throughout the day, and then USC seemed to have things turned in the right direction. Not long at all before his scheduled 4:00 p.m. announcement, Carolina seemed back on track to land him.

Then, Solomon’s announcement did not start on time. He eventually declared a commitment to Auburn. Seems like things were very close, right? They were, no doubt.

There are a few examples in this class of South Carolina losing out on prospects because of the current NIL environment, and it indeed played a role here.

We can tell you that the staff remains engaged with Solomon, who has a great relationship with Shane Beamer, Torrian Gray, Taylor Edwards, and others in Columbia.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on this one throughout the year.
