The latest intel on 4-star RB Daniel Hill after he postpones his commitment

The latest intel on 4-star RB Daniel Hill after he postpones his commitment

Daniel Hill was set to commit on Aug. 23. The four-star running back out of Meridian (Miss.) had that date set for weeks, but a day before the ceremony, he announced that he would no longer be committing this week.

According to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, South Carolina would have been the favorite to land his commitment if Hill had committed Wednesday. Shane Beamer and the Gamecocks have been a strong contender in this race since Hill and his family visited Columbia for the Tennessee game last fall.

South Carolina has created strong relationships with Hill and his family. Beamer, Montario Hardesty and Jody Wright have been recruiting Hill as hard, if not harder than any other staff. Those bonds are expected to keep the Gamecocks in this race.

The final five for Hill was a quintet of SEC schools. Joining South Carolina on his list were Alabama, LSU, Mississippi State and Tennessee. Hill is a Mississippi State legacy, but he is not expected in Starkville. LSU has not been a factor for some time based on what intel suggests. That leaves the Crimson Tide and Volunteers.

Alabama received the last visit before the August dead period kicked in. Hill grew up following the Crimson Tide and has visited Tuscaloosa around 10 times. He likes Robert Gillespie and he has relationships with numerous staff members. Sources I talk to see Hill’s decision to postpone his commitment a good sign for Alabama. It looked to be down to them and South Carolina the last couple of months.

A school that may reappear in this race is Tennessee. Hill still has regular contact with the staff in Knoxville. Leading the way is Jerry Mack. Josh Heupel has been involved as well. Intel suggests that a return trip to Tennessee could happen in early in the season. Hill has visited Knoxville a handful of times, but he did not take an official visit there as he did to Alabama and South Carolina.

According to sources, the No. 201 prospect in the On3 Industry Rankings will take a step back, focus on the start of his senior season and slow his recruitment down. Alabama, South Carolina and Tennessee are the schools coming up as the ones he is likely to visit this fall and look a little deeper into.

If Hill would have committed on Wednesday, the buzz was around South Carolina. The commitment not happening may show just how strong of a player Alabama is in this race. The new timeline could allow Tennessee time to jump back in this race too.
