Deep Dive: Purdue training camp practice No. 17

Purdue’s 17th training camp practice of 2023 was today. In all, the Boilermakers will have 19 practices in camp under first-year coach Ryan Walters. Today, the first five periods of practice were open on a hot day in West Lafayette.

1 – ILB OC Brothers spent time during position breakouts with the OLBs, working on his pass-rush moves with pass rush specialist Preston Gordon.

2 – S Sanoussi Kane sat out again, watching practice with his left wrist/hand heavily wrapped. Also sitting out: TE George Burhenn, who was watching in his No. 81 jersey. Walk-on OL Ethan Trent was wearing a red jersey. He had been out a week or so. DE Damarjhe Lewis was suited up and in action, as was C Gus Hartwig.

3 – During punt coverage, Purdue had Marquis Wilson and T.J. Sheffield fielding punts. Andrew Sowinski will be part of the mix, but he remains missing.

4 – Many of the same players are MIA: DB Ethon Cole, Sowiniski, DE J.P. Deeter, DE Prince Boyd, CB Salim Turner-Muhammad, OL Zach Richard, OL Andre Oben, OT Mahamane Moussa. I also didn’t see CB Braxton Myers or OT Daniel Johnson.

5 – Scouts from the Seahawks, Bears and Ravens were on hand.

6 – On Friday, Purdue will hold a mock game inside Ross-Ade Stadium, a full rehearsal just eight days before the season begins on Sept. 2 vs. Fresno State at noon ET.

7 – Your scholarship cornerbacks today: Zion Gunn, Derrick Rogers, Wilson, Botros Alisandro, Markevious Brown.

8 – Your scholarship safeties today: Cam Allen, Joseph Jefferson, Winston Berglund, Antonio Stevens, Anthony Brown, Dillon Thieneman.

9 – Ryan Walters announced the five captains for 2023 after practice: Quarterback Hudson Card, safety Sanoussi Kane, receiver T.J. Sheffield, outside linebacker Nic Scourton and center Gus Hartwig. Players made the selections. And Walters mentioned that Card was the top vote-getter. Impressive for a guy who has only been on campus since January.

10 – I asked Walters what has impressed him the most in camp.

“I’ve been really impressed with the progress of the offensive line,” said Walters. “Impressed with the understanding of the scheme on defense and then, obviously, I’m impressed with Hudson Card.”
