Blue Chips: Breaking down four-star Michigan DB target Jordon Johnson-Rubell

Blue Chips: Breaking down four-star Michigan DB target Jordon Johnson-Rubell

I recently caught up with elite defensive back trainer Christian White, who works with several top recruits, college players and NFL players. White trains four-star Michigan defensive back target Jordon Johnson-Rubell and also coaches him on his club 7v7 team, Texas Threat.

I caught up with White to get his thoughts on Johnson-Rubell and more.

Here are some highlights from the interview.

On his overall thoughts on Johnson-Rubell:

“I believe Jordon will immediately become one of the hardest working guys in whichever room he steps in. He gives me the vibe of a kid that is going to have an impact from Day 1. He was self-driven while he was here in Texas — before he went to IMG. He used to wake up before school and do workouts by himself in the weight room or on the track. He wanted to get himself ready to get to the point to be able to compete at the level he does today.”

On Johnson-Rubell’s offseason:

“His leadership skills are crazy. With him being at IMG and not here in Texas, he missed a lot of our team practices. I sent him the plays, and he studied, studied and studied. He asked all the questions he needed to ask before our first tournament. He did everything perfectly. He was telling other guys that had becoming to practice how to run things perfectly. It shows that despite him not physically being in Texas, that wasn’t going to stop him from being a key contributor and leader on our team. Also, his mobility has impressed. With great hips and movement, you’re able to cover so much more ground because you’re fluid in and out of transition. One rep made it to the Internet, where he was covering two or three routes at the same time. He put hands on one guy, ran to another spot and sunk to another spot. He’s so disruptive.”

On best fit at the next level:

“I think he’s a hybrid safety or nickel. More teams are putting more defensive backs on the field. I think you can take a SAM out and put a kid like Jordon in. He can cover slots and tight ends. He can also blitz off the edge and play in run support. He does all those things well. He can play the strong and free safeties roles. Shoot, he started off his high school career at corner. I think he has some corner in him, too. That elite coverage ability and physicality allows him to do so much.”

On a player comparison:

“Play style, I would have to say my guy Kam Curl (Washington Commanders safety). Coming out of high school, Kam was a big-time kid that had those safety qualities. Arkansas decided to play him at corner, and he ended up being a great safety in the NFL when he got there. I think Jordon has those same characteristics. He has the size and physicality to play in the box. He’s got the speed and cover ability. He can probably play six spots in the defense. If you needed him at linebacker, he could probably do that, too, and do it well.”

On how Johnson-Rubell would fit in at Michigan:

“I think he would fit in great. What Michigan did with Dax Hill is a similar path we’re talking about with Jordon. You can play corner, you can play safety, you can play nickel, you can play dime, you can play special teams. Those are things Jordon does well. He has that same type of athletic build to him as well as the drive and motivation. Michigan is one of the top programs in the country, and they are getting better. That’s going to help with him because he’s a kid that wants to win and compete. I think he fits what (Jim) Harbaugh likes. He’s a high character kid and leader.”
