Ohio State’s drawn-out quarterback competition a good sign for ‘younger guy’ Devin Brown

Ohio State’s drawn-out quarterback competition a good sign for ‘younger guy’ Devin Brown

The Ohio State starting quarterback remains one of the most important starting positions in college football that is yet to be filled ahead of the 2023 season. The two candidates, third-year quarterback Kyle McCord and second-year signal caller Devin Brown, are apparently neck-and-neck more than halfway through fall camp.

According to current NBC college football analyst Josh Perry and former Buckeye linebacker, the longer the competition rolls on, the better for Brown. It’s likely a sign that Brown is pushing McCord, the more experienced option, to the brink.

“A lot of people thought it was just going to be Kyle McCord’s job and Devin Brown maybe could push but wouldn’t really be in the mix there. This thing is actually very, very close. And from the people that I’ve spoken to, they’re confident in either quarterback’s ability to go out there and be successful. I think they’re just looking for that consistency. It feels like as this drags out a little bit more, it does start to favor a younger guy in Devin Brown who’s got some really good movement skill and athletic ability,” Perry told ESPN’s Greg McElroy.

McCord, unlike Brown, has a start at Ohio State — he was the starting quarterback against Akron early in the 2021 season before the job was firmly seized by CJ Stroud. Whereas Brown has one career pass attempt in college, McCord has 58 and has played in 12 games.

He’s also been around campus for another year. Perry knows this head start likely gave McCord a leg up to take the job as the older, more experienced option.

“What’s interesting to me though is the fact that Kyle McCord did come in as the experienced guy. He’s been on campus, really, for three seasons now and hasn’t really been able to pull away in that job. I’m not exactly sure what it’s going to come down to. Every coach likes to say ‘The guy who makes the least mistakes and gives us the best chance to win.’ I think it’s going to be maybe a little more than that,” Perry said.

The fact the competition is still going now is a sign to him that Brown is doing all the coaching staff would want from him to make him the starter.

Evidently, McCord still hasn’t ceded any ground as a starter has not been named. But with Brown seemingly possessing a bit more athletic upside and with one more year in the tank, Perry thinks it could start to be a favorable picture for the younger quarterback.

“When you start to project guys are maybe aren’t finished projects going into the season is — what do you think the top end is really going to be? And which guy is going to be less of a danger if you kind of put him in those critical situations without all the experience?” Perry said.
