MBB recruiting notes: Pivotal month approaches for LSU

LSU approaches the month of September with a lot of visits on the horizon, but still plenty of competition for some of the top prospects in the country. Head coach Matt McMahon and his staff prepare for the final run at putting together an elite signing class.
Here’s the latest on new visit dates and a big-picture outlook.
Two major names set visit date
Four-star forward Vyctorious Miller recently talked to On3’s Jamie Shaw about his top list of teams and included LSU alongside Kansas, Gonzaa, USC, and Oregon. The Bengal Tiger staff is now hearing that that the visit to LSU is set for Sept. 8-10.
Here’s what Miller told Shaw about LSU: “My family is all from there, and they just want me to stay home. The NIL there would be crazy because all my people are from there. I like it; I like what they’re saying; I like their colors, all the tigers, and what all they stand for. Coach (Matt) McMahon believes in his players. If he rocks with you, he gives them freedom and will stay with you through thick and thin.”
Robert Miller, another four-star forward is also visiting Sept. 8-10. With his dad being an LSU football legacy, it was important to get him on campus for a football game. LSU has had Miller as a priority for a long time and now finds itself in the final stages of a battle with Texas and Alabama for his services.
Busy weekend of Sept. 22-24
LSU is being very flexible with this weekend, seeing as it’s one of the more pivotal weekends of the year for this 2024 class. At the moment, some of the top priorities for that weekend are Derik Queen, Nic Codie, and Rakease Passmore.
There’s still flexibility from different players on LSU’s board for that date and future ones, so as the visit list gets nailed down, we’ll have you updated with the latest.
A new name to know
The aforementioned Derik Queen has been one LSU is incredibly high on and hoping to make an impression as he comes to campus this fall. Queen is the No. 12 player in the country on On3’s Industry Ranking and has attention from several big name schools. The Baltimore, Maryland native has already visited Indiana and Maryland, then says Providence, LSU, and West Virginia have all been in constant contact.
Queen is certainly among the top players on LSU’s board at this point.
Overview
There are a lot of names to know and talk about, but LSU’s staff has maintained flexibility throughout this process and that’s allowed them to cast a wide net in this class. The Tigers’ staff has been in contact and could potentially host 13 of the top 90 players in the country this fall. In all likelihood, the Tigers staff won’t host all 13 as they begin to enter the final stages with a handful of prospects, but it’s still impressive the work they’ve put in to get to this point.
As we know, there are no guarantees in recruiting. The Tigers are in tight battles with a lot of these players, but that’s what happens when you go big in recruiting top players. Matt McMahon’s staff understands that the time is now to take the next step back towards contention as a program. This 2024 class has always been the moment primed for a breakthrough.
We’ll continue to update you all with visits as they get locked in and monitor how LSU fares in winning a few of these battles.
