Joshua Lair: “I talk to Coach Sark three times a week”

Missouri City, Texas – The Texas Longhorns continue the pursuit of Marshall (Texas) high hard-hitting safety Joshua Lair.
The 6-foot-1, 185-pound walking hit stick made an official visit to Texas June 16-18. And since that time has been in constant communication with Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian.
“I talk to Sark three times a week. We texted back-and-forth Monday. He tells me to come home. That’s it. Just come home, and play for Texas.”
The interest by the Longhorns began with an evaluation by Blake Gideon. Since Gideon offered March 21, 2023, the relationship has become one that includes daily communication.
“The atmosphere and the coaches. Coach Blake (Gideon). That is my guy. We have built a strong relationship from the beginning up until now. I know some of the players on the team too. Coach Gideon and I text every day.”
When Lair thinks about Texas Longhorns football, one prevailing thought comes to mind.
“History. Really it’s just history. I grew up watching UT all my life. It’s their history.”
Lair says he talks to Texas cornerback commitment Santana Wilson the most. The two visited Texas the same weekend.
Texas is recruiting Lair to play Star and free safety.
When Inside Texas asked Lair who he was still considering, it became apparent there has been a change to the top 3. LSU is no longer in the mix.
“UT and Baylor and Washington. That’s who I’m considering.”
Dave Aranda has Baylor in the hunt
Baylor head coach Dave Aranda has left zero doubt how much Lair is coveted by the Bears.
“Every day. It’s like a group chat. Every day he talks to my mom, my uncle, my papaw. It’s very constant. It helps because they are pushing hard with my family. I like that.”
Arnada’s message on the football side is, and has been very consistent for months.
“He feels like I would be a good fit in their scheme at the Star position.”
One official visit date remains
Lair has been contemplating make a commitment prior to the start of the season. While that could still happen, he does have one my official visit on the books.
“I’ll be taking my OV to Washington for the game against Oregon October 14.”
The Huskies were in the top four, but then Lair cancelled his June official visit after trips to LSU, Baylor and Texas. Washington never gave up, however, and are now in the running once again.
“Honestly, the atmosphere is great. The depth chart as well. I love all the coaches. Coach Juice (Julius Brown) and the guys.”
The decision
Those around the Marshall High program still think there is a chance Lair could commit prior to September. If that doesn’t happen, an October decision is a lock.
“I want to go Washington. After I take that OV, just sit and weigh my options.”
Two of those options will be close to home. An idea his mom is fond of.
“She is big on me staying close. She is not digging me going far from home. That’s one thing, and I understand that. I’m keeping that in my pocket. I want to major in sports medicine, so that will be a factor.”
Lair is the No. 429 ranked prospect nationally in the 2024 cycle. He checks in as the No. 39 ranked safety as well.
