SMU Football Day 10 practice notebook

SMU Football was back on the practice field Friday after a day off on Thursday to continue its run of fall camp practices. Get the rundown on another practice for the Mustangs inside.
*** Quarterback Preston Stone continues to have a strong week. He’s really put it together lately, making plenty of plays. Stone and Moochie Dixon connected for a deep touchdown as Dixon created great separation from the defender. Key’Shawn Smith continued his strong week as he caught a deep ball from Stone with Jahari Rogers in coverage.
*** Wide receiver Jordan Kerley found space in the Cover 2 for a first down from Stone. Versatile playmaker Roderick Daniels had a strong day as well, connecting with Stone in the gaps of the defense multiple times.
*** Running back Jaylan Knighton is a star in the making. He had a strong day running the ball, but also caught a wheel route for a touchdown from Stone. Stone also hit transfer running back LJ Johnson for a screen pass that went for a touchdown. Finally, Velton Gardner had a standout Friday practice as well. Running back Camar Wheaton, who was nicked up Wednesday, was a full-go on Friday.
*** Safeties Isaiah Nwokobia and Bryan Massey both had interceptions off quarterback Kevin Henry-Jennings. Romello Brinson and Henry-Jennings connected for a big play, beating AJ Davis and Ahmaad Moses for a touchdown.
*** Wide receiver Jordan Hudson was slightly nicked up in practice on Wednesday, which left him on Friday doing stretches and working on footwork for the most part.
*** Elijah Roberts and Nelson Paul are forming a good tandem of defensive ends. The entire defensive line, especially the starters, continues to have moments that impress.
*** Freshman wideout Jamarion Carroll saw some time with the second team with Hudson limited and the team staying a little fresh with a scrimmage coming on Saturday. He had a great catch along the sidelines from Henry-Jennings.
*** Cornerback Chris Megginson had a good Friday against the starting offense, making a couple plays.
SMU 7-on-7 period
*** Defensive back Kyron Chambers had several pass breakups on all three SMU quarterbacks — Stone, Henry-Jennings and Keldric Luster. Nickel CJ Sanders also had an impressive day in man coverage.
*** Wideout Jake Bailey continues to find the soft spots in the defense with Stone. Stone also continued his good connection with Smith in 7-on-7, making a throw between the safety and cornerback for a deep post.
*** Henry-Jennings hit Dixon with a pass for a big gain. Shortly after though, Smith tipped a ball from Henry-Jennings that was high, which resulted in Nwokobia nabbing an interception. Smith and Henry-Jennings bounced back on the next play though, connecting on a deep out route along the sideline with a perfect pass.
