2025 four-star quarterback Keelon Russell returned to Ole Miss for ‘business trip’

2025 Duncanville (Tex.) quarterback Keelon Russell received an offer from Ole Miss tight ends coach John David Baker and offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. in May. Memphis, SMU, Purdue, Texas A&M, Baylor North Texas and TCU have all extended offers this summer. And others are expected to follow suit for the 6-foot-3, 175 pound prospect.

Russell made his return to Oxford, Miss., for Juice Fest 23 at the end of July. He classified it as a “business trip” which he hopes turns into a genuine learning experience.

“I want to see how the coaches perform in the football process,” Russell said. “Relationships and getting us as players better. There’s a lot of development I need to do so them helping me keep going is way better than just being here.”

“I hope to show them everything,” Russell said. “How good I can spin it, how deep I can spin it. A lot of off-platform throws. You don’t see a lot of quarterbacks do that, I work on that. I want to show them how good of an all-around quarterback.”

Ole Miss loves what Keelon Russell brings to the proverbial table from a skill set perspective. He talks about what he does best.

“If I see you open I am going to make a play,” Russell said. “Deep down the field, short, right in front of my face. I’m going to get you the ball so you can get it and go do something with it.”

As a sophomore, Russell helped Duncanville to a perfect 15-0 record and the Texas 6A D-I state championship. He tossed the rock for 2,377 yards and 22 touchdowns, completing 66.9 percent of his passes. He also ran the football 48 times for 203 yards and three more scores.

Russell tells OMSpirit he wants to repeat as state champs in 2023. But that’s not all.

But he also wants to build crucial camaraderie with his new offensive weapons and offensive teammates.

“I want to run it back and get another ring,” Russell said. “Working on chemistry and reps with incoming receivers. Relationships with offense. My mechanics, can never go wrong improving that every day. Little details will take you farther.”

The Rebels have stiff competition from several high-major programs as Russell prepares for his junior year. But for now, there’s one program in particular who appears to be Ole Miss’ top competition.

“Maybe SMU, they’ve talked to me a lot,” Russell said. “I was down there recently and they love me down there. They communicate every day and build that relationship.”
