Key OT target Matty Augustine on what keeps bringing him back to Notre Dame

Back in mid-April, Greenwich (Conn.) Brunswick School class of 2025 offensive tackle Matty Augustine visited Notre Dame as a prospect who hoped to soon receive an offer from the Fighting Irish.
He would get that opportunity a month and a half later at the Notre Dame Lineman’s Challenge camp, and 6-7, 290-pounder did not disappoint. He picked up an offer from head coach Marcus Freeman after the camp.
And Augustine made trip No. 3 to South Bend at the end of July for the staff’s “Grill and Chill” recruiting outing.
“The feel I get with Coach Rudolph, the recruiting staff and the academic and football excellence — it’s just a great school,” Augustine told Blue & Gold. “I have a great connection with all the coaches and Chad [Bowden], Caleb [Davis] and Dre [Brown]; the recruiting staff is awesome.
“The people in that program is why I keep coming back.”
His visit at the end of July was unique.
“This trip was a ton of fun,” Augustine said. “It was different than other visits but in a good way. I got to connect with coaches and other O-linemen on the team and recruits in a way that I haven’t before. It’s good to get to know kids you could play with one day. It was great to spend a day with the coaches, have fun and compete.”
Another notable part of the Augustine’s trip actually occurred the day before the Grill and Chill. On July 29, Augustine and his family saw Notre Dame practice. He was accompanied by his high school teammate and Notre Dame safety target Ethan Long, plus Long’s family.
“It was under the lights in the stadium; it was sick,” Augustine said. “I got see Coach [Joe] Rudolph and the assistant offensive line coaches in action. They coach very similar to my high school head coach, who also coaches the offensive line. That was good to see.”
Augustine had productive conversations with the Notre Dame coaches and staff while on campus.
“When you’re on a visit or at a camp, it can be a lot of ‘football stuff.’ But the nice thing about this visit was they took football out of it completely,” he explained. “It was either about recruiting or just having a fun time. They were seeing what my timeline was and if we’d come back for a game.”
The massive offensive tackle was candid with his thoughts on his commitment timeline and specifically how it relates to Notre Dame.
“There’s no tackle commits for Notre Dame right now, but there’s the potential of early commits at the position,” he said. “But I’m not worried about that right now. I’m focused on putting out good tape from early in my season.
“If a tackle does commit, then maybe that pushes me a little bit more in my recruiting process, but right now, I’m not rushed with it. I’m looking to commit after the season.”
Both Augustine and Long are considered Notre Dame leans according to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM).
“We’ve gotten really close, especially during the recruiting process,” Augustine said of Long. “Neither of us have made a decision on where we want to go, but it’s good to have a great kid like that who pushes me hard in the weight room and on the field.”
Augustine ranks as nation’s No. 345 overall player and No. 25 offensive tackle according to the 2025 On3 Industry Ranking.
