Five-Star Plus+ linebacker Suntarine Perkins already earning plenty of rat poison

Five-Star Plus+ linebacker Suntarine Perkins already earning plenty of rat poison

Five-star Plus+ linebacker Suntarine Perkins has quickly acclimated to things since arriving on campus at Ole Miss. The 6-foot-3, 205 pound true freshman is already earning high praise from head coach Lane Kiffin and defensive coordinator Pete Golding. But he’s also making the rounds nationally on talk shows.

CBS Sports’ Josh Pate recently talked about Perkins on his show, “The Late Kick with Josh Pate”. He raved about what the former five-star recruit is doing in fall camp.

“Alabama wanted this kid bad,” Pate said. “He is going to stand out at Ole Miss. It’s only a matter of time.”

Perkins was the No. 14 overall prospect and No. 1 linebacker in the 2023 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average which utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 1 player in Mississippi.

The Under Armour All-American was named to the Clarion-Ledger’s 2022 Dandy Dozen and was picked as Mr. Football for Mississippi’s 3A classification. Perkins played running back and linebacker at Raleigh (Miss.) and led the program to its first state title in 2022.

Perkins had 32 carries for 331 yards and four touchdowns in the state title game. Defensively, he had six tackles and an interception on defense. He finished with more than 5,000 all-purpose yards and 267 tackles and 10 sacks over his prep career. The Ole Miss signee was also named MVP of the Mississippi-Alabama All-Star game after making 10 tackles and also grabbing three tackles for a loss.

Pate went on to talk about the physical makeup of the five-star linebacker. Not only is his play turning heads, but Perkins isn’t built like your typical 18-year old.

“He looks different than everyone else out there,” Pate said. “He did last year. He could’ve walked on campus as a high school senior and looked different.

Ole Miss four-star 2023 commitment Suntarine Perkins

Suntarine Perkins has been a name to know for years. And now he is a guy to watch for the 2023 season.

So is four-star wide receiver signee Ayden Williams. Both earned high marks from Kiffin at SEC Media days last month.

“Both of those guys we hope play this year and have significant roles,” Kiffin said. “They’re really talented and have hit the ground running here in the offseason, trying to learn everything.

“They’re at a position of need so we have high expectations for both of them.”

Williams finished off his 2022 season with 1,265 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns. After, he went down to Mobile, Ala., for the MS/AL All-Star Game and dominated. The 86th overall prospect is as solid as it comes with his strong hands and precise route-running.

He has measured in at 6-foot-3, 190 pounds and carries it very well. His frame doesn’t compromise his ability to create separation and to runaway from would-be defenders.

“I evaluated (star Ohio State wide receiver) Jaxon Smith-Njigba really closely in the 2020 cycle,” Charles Power said recently, in an extensive sit-down interview with On3’s director of scouting and rankings.

“Saw him a ton. He’s one of my favorite prospects in that class. Stylistically, I think Smith-Njigba is a pretty good comparison (for Williams), for sure. I think that’s on the right track.”
