SMU Football Fan Day practice notebook

SMU Football Fan Day practice notebook

SMU Football was back on the practice field on Saturday for Fan Day, the first public outing for the Mustangs in 2023. How’d the team look? On The Pony Express contributor Eddie Moran runs down some takeaways from the practice.

*** SMU cornerback Charles Woods continues to be that uber competitive corner that SMU’s been missing. Woods had multiple pass breakups that were impressive, including one on Jordan Hudson in 1-on-1s. Hudson and Woods have had some strong battles throughout fall camp so far. Hudson did bounce back with a strong whip route against another defensive back in 1-on-1s that ended with a strong catch.

*** Quarterback Preston Stone had a great play-action that led to a run from him to kick off his play in the team period. He continues to show that zip on the ball you want to see.

*** Wide receiver Key’Shawn Smith had a great comeback route, attacking the football to bring it in. He also had a great catch down the sideline where he went up and grabbed the ball over the defender.

*** Quarterback Kevin Henry-Jennings got things going on the tempo front a little more on Saturday. He had a terrific fake scramble where he threw on the run and found SMU wideout Romello Brinson for a touchdown. He also found Moochie Dixon down the seam for a touchdown.

*** Running back Camar Wheaton had a nice hard run up the middle. Velton Gardner had a strong run with a nice juke move and stiff arm in the open field, which led to a 1st down. He also had a nice run off the tackle and up the sideline.

*** We’ve talked about Jaylan Knighton’s talent catching the ball and he showed that on a wheel route for a touchdown in practice on Saturday.

*** Safety Bryan Massey had a nice interception after doing a good job in press coverage during the 1-on-1 portion. He also had a hit on tight end Micah Hilts that led to some pushing and shoving.

*** Cornerback Jaelyn Davis-Robinson had a nice breakup on a deep route in the endzone during the team period.

*** New edge rusher Cam Robertson had a strong batdown at the line of scrimmage on Stone. The whole defensive line contained Stone well from scrambling on Saturday for the most part.

*** Wideout Roderick Daniels made a one-handed catch in the back corner of the endzone during 1-on-1s.

*** Cornerback Jahari Rogers made a great interception during the team period on a deep ball.
