Texas Football: Notes on a number of positions from Day 3 of training camp

The lights were on the Frank Denius Fields and the shoulder pads were on Longhorn football players Friday night as Texas held its third practice of preseason training camp. Here are a number of notes and observations from the 20 minute media viewing window on several different positions.

First off, Jonathon Brooks was not at practice due to an illness, per a UT spokesperson.

There were scouts present from the Los Angeles Chargers, the New York Giants, and the Carolina Panthers.

With that out of the way, here’s what I saw from the O-line after Jordan Whittington led the “Horn Jacks” to kick off practice.

While the rest of the team was working on punt coverage and return, Kyle Flood’s group were working with the two-man sled and then on nailing down the proper footwork and hand placement for the various zone schemes the Horns run. Tackles went first, then guards, then centers in the one-on-one drill. This offered a glimpse at each position’s pecking order, but keep in mind that players can be moved and the No. 6 OL is going to make his way to the field before the No. 2 LG if he’s perceived as the better player.

LT: Kelvin Banks – Cam Williams – Trevor Goosby – Jaydon Chatman

LG: Hayden Conner – Neto Umeozulu – Connor Stroh – Max Merril

C: Jake Majors – Connor Robertson – Sawyer Goram-Welch – Hayden Conner – Cole Hutson – Rick McBroom

RG: Cole Hutson – DJ Campbell – Payton Kirkland

RT: Christian Jones – Andre Cojoe – Malik Agbo – Robert Sweeney

Flood was not afraid to stop the drill when a player, typically a freshman on Friday, didn’t do it the way he preferred.

I got to watch running backs for a little bit, and one of the drills emphasized quick change of direction and bursting upfield. On the field was a mat with all the gaps labeled like this one. A coach would call out a gap and the back had to make a quick cut after taking the handoff to get up to speed and through the hole.

Without Brooks, the order was

RB: Keilan Robinson – Jaydon Blue – CJ Baxter – Colin Page – Ky Woods – Savion Red – Tre Wisner.

Quarterback had the same top three as usual of Quinn Ewers, Maalik Murphy, and Arch Manning.

There was one noticeable change in the wide receiver order at the field spot.

Z: Xavier Worthy – Johntay Cook – Isaiah Neyor

X: AD Mitchell – Casey Cain – Thatcher Milton

H: Jordan Whittington – DeAndre Moore – Ryan Niblett

There was one rep where Jordan Whittington didn’t get things exactly right. Instead of jogging along to the next station, he let Moore take his rep then took the opportunity to get it right immediately after thanks to some coaching from Chris Jackson and Steve Sarkisian.

TE: Ja’Tavion Sanders – Gunnar Helm – Patrick Bayouth – Gus Asel – Will Randle – Spencer Shannon.

I did not spot Juan Davis.

Turnover centric drills were also prevalent on Friday and that included the use of some special equipment by the nickel backs.

How much of an emphasis has been placed on forcing turnovers? Terry Joseph led a drill where every UT nickel wore boxing gloves and worked at punching the ball loose. pic.twitter.com/1PL6B2duzT

It’s obvious that’s an emphasis for the Longhorns this year, and Texas isn’t afraid to use any means available to drill that into players’ heads.
