Iowa Recruiting Spotlight: Wide Receiver

Iowa Recruiting Spotlight: Wide Receiver

As we continue our position-by-position breakdown of Iowa’s recruiting, next up is wide receiver where the Hawkeyes have two commitments in the Class of 2024 and are looking to add one more and have several promising targets in the Class of 2025 as well. We dive into all of the details and names, the hits and misses, and much more in this update.

Iowa’s Class of 2024

The Hawkeyes were able to land two early commitments at the wide receiver position this summer with verbal pledges from KJ Parker and Reece Vander Zee.

Starting with Vander Zee, the 6-foot-5, 190-pounder is a multisport star in high school that has the size that Iowa has been looking for outside at the X wide receiver position. As a junior, he had 32 catches for 768 yards and 10 touchdowns for Class 2A state champion Central Lyon/George-Little Rock and will be joining high school teammates in Zach Lutmer and Graham Eben at Iowa next year. Vander Zee verbally committed to the Hawkeyes on June 27, 2023, choosing Iowa over scholarship offers from Iowa State, Nebraska, Northern Illinois, Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan, Air Force, South Dakota State, Montana State, UNI, Furman, and Yale.

With Parker, the Hawkeyes are adding a versatile playmaker that had 37 catches for 1,082 yards and 17 touchdowns last season at IC Catholic Prep in Elmhurst, Illinois. There, one of his coaches is former Hawkeye Matt Bowen, who is very high on Parker’s future at the wide receiver position. In late June, the 5-foot-11, 165-pound Parker gave his commitment shortly after his official visit to Iowa City, choosing the Hawkeyes over scholarship offers from Cincinnati, Wisconsin, Iowa State, Marshall, Northern Illinois, Miami-OH, Western Michigan, Toledo, Buffalo, and Ohio, among others.

Remaining Targets in 2024

The Iowa coaching staff would like to add one more wide receiver in the Class of 2024 with the top target right now being Jayquan Reid. The 5-foot-11, 172-pound Reid, a Miami native, has an official visit scheduled to Iowa City for September 16. If things go well, it seems like chances are he will be a Hawkeye. Right now, the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine has Iowa as the favorite at 60.3%, followed by South Florida at 18.7%. Other scholarship offers include Central Florida, UAB, Liberty, Marshall, Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Central Michigan, Western Michigan, Akron, Toledo, Western Carolina, Appalachian State, Middle Tennessee State, Georgia State, Grambling State, James Madison, and Massachusetts.

Class of 2024 Misses

Some of Iowa’s early offers at wide receiver that ended up going elsewhere would be Cam Williams (Notre Dame), Dae’vonn Hall (Nebraska), Isaiah McMorris (Nebraska), Luke Williams (Purdue), and Charlie Becker (Indiana).

Class of 2025 Top Targets

Looking at Iowa’s early offers in the Class of 2025, in-state wide receiver Xzavion Robinson remains a top target. The 6-foot-0, 175-pound Robinson, who is also a basketball star at West Des Moines Valley, is currently looking over an offer list that includes Iowa, Iowa State, Missouri, Colorado, and Vanderbilt.

Other wide receiver offers for 2025 include Talyn Taylor, Isaiah Mozee, Corey Simms, Donovan Olugbode, Joshua Guerrier, Cashus Shivers, and Naeshaun Montgomery.
