LSU WBB offseason report: Recruiting battles, Morrow joins reigning champs

LSU remained incredibly active on the recruiting trail in the month of July. Most recently, head coach Kim Mulkey and assistant coach Gary Redus took trips Memphis and Cincinnati to watch some of the top 2024s, 2025s, and 2026s in the country to further finalize their boards for the coming years. Here’s an update of where the Tigers stand on the recruiting front as they chase four of the top five players in the country for the 2024 class.

2024 class

*Rankings per ESPN’s 2024 HoopGurlz Recruiting Rankings

Top targets: No. 87 Jada Richard (Committed), No. 2 Sarah Strong, No. 3 Jeloni Cambridge, No. 5 Kate Koval, No. 1 Joyce Edwards.

At this moment, the Tigers are still very much in a recruiting battle for the four uncommitted players on their boards. For Strong, LSU’s top competitor is UConn. For Cambridge, LSU’s top competitor is Ohio State. For Koval it’s Notre Dame. For Edwards it’s South Carolina, Stanford, Maryland, and even some other teams in the race with LSU.

There’s a confidence that LSU will be in contention to potentially land three, or even all four, if the official visits go well and the Tigers’ staff close strong. At this moment, I get the feeling Strong is the one LSU is in the best position for entering the fall.

Mulkey has given her roster plenty of flexibility in the coming years with just 12 players on the current roster on scholarship. The limit in women’s basketball is 15.

2025 Class

*Rankings per ESPN’s 2025 HoopGurlz Recruiting Rankings

Top Targets: No. 2 Jasmine Davidson, No. 1 Aaliyah Chavez, No. 3 Darianna Alexander, No. 4 ZaKiyah Johnson, No. 12 Addison Deal.

The top of the list for LSU early on is Davidson out of Oregon. Both Mulkey and Redus were on hand to watch her in late July and they were impressed by her potential as a 6-foot-1 wing.

Offseason notes

*** After Friday, the players will have ten days off, free to visit their families, rest/recover, and prepare for the school year. Flaujae has music/touring obligations. Mikaylah and Aneesah will be at a Nike Camp for five days in Oregon. Del Rosario is visiting her family in the Dominican Republic.

*** Aalyah Del Rosario continues to rehab from her surgery, but she is not yet cleared to run or jump. She continues to work hard and expectations are that she’ll be 100 percent cleared once the team gets started in September. There’s confidence from the coaching staff that they know what they’re getting with Del Rosario because of her size and work ethic.

*** As mentioned before, the freshmen are getting in work every day with one another. Aneesah Morrow has joined the group that is training with Redus and the competition level continues to rise. Angelica Velez has worked on her 3-point shot and is much more confident. Janae Kent is working on her handle to pair with her impressive physical tools. Mikaylah Williams can do just about everything, so the staff is continuing to push her. The group plays one-on-one every day and the trash talk comes with it. This freshman group has a huge chip on its shoulder and is waiting to take on the returners with the hope to push one another to get even better.

*** An intriguing subplot for the coaching staff this offseason is where to focus with Morrow, who can really play the 3 or the 4 with her unique skill set. Her shooting has really impressed the staff and opens the door for her to perhaps play more on the wing than previously thought.
