High priority 4-star RB visits Miami Hurricanes: “They’re climbing in a good direction right now”
Highly touted Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy four-star running back Jerrick Gibson spent this past weekend at the University of Miami and believes the Hurricanes may be rising in his recruitment following his time in Coral Gables.
“They’re climbing in a good direction right now,” Gibson told CaneSport. “I’ve just got to feel them out a little bit more and get back out here to see how it really is and talk to the players a little bit more.”
The No. 33 overall prospect in the 2024 class according to the On3 Industry Ranking explained that one of the main reasons he wanted to come to Miami was to begin building a connection with new Hurricanes running back coach Tim Harris.
“As you know the old running back coach had left so I had to get out here to see what coach (Tim) Harris was turning these running back into,” Gibson said. “I can see the shift in the running backs mindsets and the way he’s transforming them to be a better back. I really liked the visit, I think I came here and saw what I needed to see.”
Harris recruited Gibson while at UCF and has remained in touch with him on a regular basis since moving to Miami. Together with Harris, Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal has been extensively involved in recruiting the No. 1 running back in the 2024 cycle, and Gibson is pleased with the message he is receiving from Miami.
“They tell me to just stay focused and finish out your senior year,” Gibson said. “It’ll come to you when you know it.”
Gibson praised Cristobal and feels the program is on the right track under his leadership, and he is interested to see what some of his old IMG teammates can achieve for the Hurricanes this upcoming season.
“I think he’s (Cristobal) headed in a great direction,” Gibson said. “He had a great recruiting class with the 2023’s with my boys Francis (Mauigoa), Riley (Williams), and just a lot of good 2023 players.”
According to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, Texas is currently the favorite to land Gibson’s commitment leading all schools with 91.4 %. Gibson does not have a list of wants or needs in a school but says he will announce his decision once he has a strong feeling about a program.
“I feel like I’ll just know,” Gibson said. “I’ll have a good feeling and just know my decision.”
CaneSport’s take
Miami appeared to be on the outside looking in with Gibson, but with Harris’ recent hire, it might be a fresh start for the Hurricanes in terms of his recruiting, since he stated one of the main reasons he wanted to come to Coral Gables largely was to meet him. Gibson anticipates returning to Miami again in the near future and is in the process of working out a date with the coaching staff. It is unclear whether this is for an unofficial or official visit, but having him on campus and among the new coaching staff will be critical if Miami wants to continue to strengthen its connection with the blue-chip prospect.
