4-star Kris Jones opens up on commitment: ‘Georgia sells itself’

Fairfax (Va.) four-star linebacker Kris Jones didn’t have to be sold on Georgia. Jones is now Georiga’s 26th commit in the class of 2024.

Jones decided to go to Georgia. When he peeled back the layers of what Georgia had to offer, got to know Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann and took a look into the Bulldogs’ culture, it was a no-brainer decision.

The No. 128 overall prospect in the On3 Industry Rankings is a Bulldog. Jones feels good about the decision he has made to make his way to Athens next year.

“Georgia sells itself,” Jones told DawgsHQ. “There really isn’t a selling point. Coach (Glenn) Schumann develops his linebackers really well and I feel like that would be good for me on the next level.”

Schumann’s ability to develop linebackers was the unspoken part of the equation for Jones. Getting to know Schumann was a big piece of the puzzle once he began developing a relationship with Georgia wholeheartedly.

Jones credits his relationship with Schumann as one of the ones that helped him make his decision.

“The relationship I have with coach Schumann, (was a big one),” Jones said. “He’s been honest with me this whole process and I respect and appreciate that.”

Georgia has now landed five four-star or higher linebackers in the last two cycles, six if you count Demarcus Riddick who has since flipped to Auburn.

Jones feels it’s Schumann’s wealth of knowledge that has attracted talented linebackers to Athens.

“Because the knowledge coach Schu has at the LB spot is ridiculous,” Jones said. “He’s a genius and learning under him could take you to the next level.”

Kris Jones sees Georgia as a schematic fit, as well as a culture fit

Jones has considered Georgia’s defensive scheme in length throughout the process. The Bulldogs have laid out a unique plan for how to use Jones.

Georgia’s scheme has also been one that has allowed different types of linebackers to flourish alongside one another.

Jones feels his versatility could be on display a lot in Athens. He’s played as an outside linebacker for much of his high school career. Georgia’s willingness to move him around was something that caught his attention.

“How they move their will linebackers around (caught my attention), I’m not just stuck in the middle I’d be on the edge and also covering tight ends,” Jones said.

He’s willing to compete wherever he plays. The presence of other blue-chip prospects doesn’t bother Jones.

“Competition is the only way you get better,” Jones said. “Anything easy isn’t good. Working for something and competing for it makes it so much better.”

Jones was big on academics throughout his recruitment. He and his family dove in on what Georgia had to offer and he came away impressed.

“It’s a top 20 public institution in the nation,” Jones said. “I would be learning good football and I would be  getting a great education you can’t beat that.”
