Sunday’s Takeaway: Make This Season A Memory

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around for a little while, you could miss it.
Ferris Bueller is a fictional character wanting to enjoy every minute of every day with the people closest in his life. It’s a movie that tells a story about what’s really important, and how to deal with the ups and downs while escaping the realities of life.
And who can’t use a little escape?
As far as I’m concerned the John Hughes movie is the perfect metaphor for USC’s 2023 football season. Heck, Ferris Bueller could even be a Trojan fan; A little arrogant, slightly narcissistic, competitive, and unsure of what the future holds.
What happens after Caleb Williams moves onto the NFL? Or when the Trojans are preparing for the chance to play their 15th game of the season, how will the recruits react? And once the Trojans leave the Pac-12 as more than just the Conference Champion, how will their lives be different?
Regardless of each outcome, things are going to be different things are going to be different. And that’s why it’s so important to enjoy every minute and make a memory.
When you attend your next USC game or Trojan Family get-together and Superman throws a TD pass to Jude Wolfe, make sure you celebrate like it’s the last score of the season. And during that special moment, also make sure you look at your friends and loved ones’ faces and remember the joy they’re experiencing. Because that’s what it’s all about.

Everyone needs to loosen up.
The season’s first kickoff against San Jose St. is still 4 weeks away.
USC football fans are passionate. The fans of recruiting can be demanding because they act like it’s the only thing of importance in their lives.
However, Letter of Intent Day is in December which means there’s still time.
There is still enough time for those recruiting diamonds to be squeezed out while the pressure mounts. So when a recruit makes the decision to attend a different school instead of becoming a Trojan, unclinch, and stop pretending that life is going to end. Because “You’re not dying. You just can’t think of anything good to do.”
The fans who are passionate about Trojan recruiting tend to get those two things mixed up.
Every fanbase has its Cameron.
There are Camerons in USC’s fanbase who should be labeled as neurotic because they either won’t or can’t allow themselves to enjoy a good time. We all know someone like that and we care about them deeply even if they do see things differently. “It’s understanding that makes it possible for people like us to tolerate a person like yourself.”
During the season don’t ask, “What will the USC Defense do today.” The question should be “What aren’t the opposing offenses going to be able to do today?”
A day off spent watching USC football should capture the endless possibilities ahead. So instead of being a Cameron anticipating the worst thing possible happening at every turn. Pretend you are Abe Frohman the Sausage King, and enjoy the journey and some nice tailgates with friends.
There’s so much to do and experience during a college football game as a fan, and yet we take it for granted that the season will last forever. Before you know it those excused days come to an end, Mr. Rooney is back in charge, and someone’s dull voice is droning on in the background.
We spend our daily life listening to authority figures who have voices that sound like nails across the chalkboard and worrying about stuff out of our control.
So why not take a day off from life and embrace what makes a part of our lives so memorable?
In 2023, head over to the L.A. Memorial Coliseum and explore this beautiful old museum that has housed some of the greatest pieces of live performance art ever produced. Let the Spirit of Troy overwhelm your senses with music that makes you smile.
I’ll say it again…Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around for a little while, you could miss it.
