2024 OT talks high interest in Alabama following second visit

2024 OT talks high interest in Alabama following second visit

Alabama is continuing to recruit international football prospects. On July 9, the Crimson Tide landed Germany-based linebacker Justin Okronkwo. Also, Nick Saban‘s staff is recruiting Canadian EDGE prospect Steve Mboumoua. Bama has welcomed Nigeria native Favour Edwin on campus a couple of times this summer, including Saturday’s Champions Cook-Out.

Edwin, who turned 18 in February, moved to the United States from Nigeria a couple of years ago. He has yet to play a regular season snap of football, but the 6-foot-8, 290-pound offensive tackle had a good showing at one of Alabama’s camps last month.

The Tide offered him on June 14, and made yet another strong impression on Edwin this weekend.

“Everything stood out to me,” Edwin told BamaOnLine. “It’s Alabama. The coaches, the success. You have Nick Saban, the greatest of all time. The players… I feel like it’s more of a family-oriented school than people think. It’s a great place to be for sure.

“It was a great visit today. I really had a lot of fun. Think that might have been my favorite visit thus far. I would give it an A-plus.”

Edwin relished the opportunity to hang out with all of Alabama’s Class of 2024 offensive lineman commits on Saturday.

“I met with Casey [Poe], William [Sanders], and Joe [Ionata] today. I spent time with all the commits,” Edwin said. “They were vibing. They were like, ‘Bro what are you waiting for? Just come.’ It was just good vibes overall at Bama. Aside from the football part, it’s a family. We had some of the o-line come out and hang out with us.”

To this point, Edwin has reported nine offers. The first two came from Georgia Tech and then Florida in the spring. More schools could dip into the mix once they see him this fall, but Edwin says Alabama is in his top three along with the Gators and the Yellowjackets.

“With Alabama, what can you say? It’s everything that anybody would ever dream of. Definitely up there for sure,” Edwin said. “It’s a top school, regardless of who you are. You can’t put Alabama below. It’s a top priority for me.”

Edwin, who plays for Eagles Landing Christian Academy in McDonough (Ga.), is aiming to commit either in late August or early September.

Edwin has built a good connection with Alabama’s Eric Wolford

Throughout Favour Edwin’s conversation with BamaOnLine, he praised Eric Wolford at every chance he could. Alabama’s offensive line coach has connected with Edwin on these two visits, and has kept the communication going with him on a regular basis.

“He was honest throughout the whole thing,” Edwin said of Wolford. “Just keeps it real about what the process is like, what Alabama is like, and the goals for them. He laid out everything for me. A great dude for sure.

“I think he’s one of the coaches that text me the most. He texts me almost every day,” Edwin continued. “If I was to describe the relationship I have with him, he might be the best I have so far. Definitely way up there.

“In the recruiting process, you’ve got people lying to you. You have people lying to you back-and-forth. So, having people like [Coach Wolf] in your recruiting process with the whole NIL stuff, it’s really important. I really like that for sure.”

Edwin is willing to put in the work.

He arrived in the United States at roughly 180 or 190 pounds. Then, later on with the help of his strength and conditioning coach, he added 70 pounds in about four or five months. Edwin, who played both sides of the ball initially, says the game came naturally to him when he got on the gridiron for the first time.

Still early on in his development, Edwin has no issues with waiting his turn to get on the field in college.

“I told Coach Wolf earlier, ‘The best thing for me is to play with the best,’” Edwin said. “If I go against the best in practice, I’ll get better. The only way you can get better is through reps. If you get the best reps from the best guys, you’re going to be good.

“You just have to put the NFL as a goal,” Edwin added. “Even if I don’t get in for my freshman or sophomore year… if I get in during my junior or senior year as a solid offensive tackle, that’s all you’ve got to do. If you want to have a great future, you have to have a great plan.”

For Edwin, the proof is in the pudding when it comes to Alabama’s player development.

“You walk through the hall and they show you how many first-rounders they have in the league. They’ve already done it a million times,” Edwin said. “Coach Wolf told me just to stick to the plan, and we’re going to take care of you.”

An official visit to Alabama has not yet been scheduled, but Edwin plans on taking one during the season.

“If I could come to every game, trust me, I’m doing it,” Edwin said. “I know I want to see the Texas game for sure. Haven’t been to a lot of college football games, so I really want to see what the experience is like.”
