Miami Hurricanes 2023 season preview: Game 11 Louisville

Miami Hurricanes 2023 season preview: Game 11 Louisville

As the Miami Hurricanes 2023 season nears its end, UM will welcome in the Louisville Cardinals on Senior Night for the final home contest of 2023 on Nov. 18.

After the departure of former head coach Scott Satterfield, who is now at Cincinnati, former Louisville offensive coordinator Jeff Brohm is now leading the program after spending the last six seasons at Purdue.

Under Brohm, expect the Cardinals to be a pass-first team with Cal transfer Jack Plummer under center in 2023. In 2022, he threw for 3,095 yards with 21 TDs and nine INTs, and the former Purdue signee has 6,500 career passing yards with 47 TDs and 19 INTs.

From last year’s squad that averaged 26.9 points and 406.5 yards per game, Louisville brings back five starters – including RB Jawhar Jordan (815 yards, 4 TDs) who ended the season with three straight 100-yard games) – but loses its top two passing game targets, Tyler Hudson (1,034 yards, 2 TDs) and TE Marshon Ford (434 yards, 3 TDs) to the NFL.

Ahmari Huggins-Bruce (365 yards, 2 TDs) and Braden Smith (215 yards, 1 TD) return at wide receiver, and a WR addition that could make some big plays right out of the gate is Georgia State’s Jamari Thrash, who had 1,112 yards and seven TDs last season. Kevin Coleman, who chose Jackson State over Miami in the Class of 2022, also has transferred to Louisville off a 475-yard, 13-TD season.

Up front along the offensive line, the Cardinals return Bryan Hudson, Renato Brown (second-team All-ACC pick), and Michael Gonzalez while also adding Virginia transfer John Paul Flores, who will look to make an impact early.

On the defensive side, six starters from last year will be suiting up for the Cardinal in 2023, including defensive backs M.J. Griffin (45 tackles, 2 INTs), Jarvis Brownlee (66 tackles, 2 INTs) and Josh Menkins (55 tackles, INT). Through the transfer portal, the Cardinals added former UNC defensive back Storm Duck to their DB room, along with former Miami safety Gilbert Frierson, who will be making his first return to South Florida.

In the box, Louisville will have to deal with the losses of M.J. Griffin (45 tackles, 2 INTs), Jarvis Brownlee (66 tackles, 2 INTs), and Josh Menkins (55 tackles, INT) but hope that the likes of Ashton Gillotte (6 sacks) and LB Ben Perry can fill in the voids left behind.

This contest will be vital for the Hurricanes as they look to close out their home schedule on a high note and earn a crucial ACC conference win against a team that they match up fairly well against.
