What the additions of Deontae and Devontae Armstrong mean for Ohio State

What the additions of Deontae and Devontae Armstrong mean for Ohio State

COLUMBUS — Ohio State continues to build its 2024 class from the inside out.

The Buckeyes added a monster pair of commitments Monday with twin offensive linemen Deontae and Devontae Armstrong.

The four-star Lakewood (Ohio) St. Edward offensive linemen chose Ohio State over Michigan, Penn State and others.

What does their addition mean to the Buckeyes’ 2024 class?

Lettermen Row breaks it all down below.

ICYMI: Pair of in-state offensive linemen commit to Ohio State

What commitment means for Ohio State’s 2024 class

Deontae Armstrong said it himself in his commitment announcement.

“The saying still stands, the best in Ohio stay in Ohio, I’m coming home.”

Armstrong’s’ commitments come at a pivotal time for Ohio State on the trail and are much needed with more on the way soon. They further bolster the offensive line haul for offensive line coach Justin Frye, who already has brought in Ian Moore and Marc Nave.

Truthfully, one of the biggest impacts of their decision is the sentiment on in-state recruiting. Ohio State is pushing the vote on in-state recruiting and locking down the border. Of the in-state prospects they have offered, the Buckeyes are at the very least soft leaders for all of them.

They now have the Armstrongs, Nave and linebacker Garrett Stover in the class. The only other uncommitted Ohioans that hold an offer are Aaron Scott Jr., Bryce West, Reggie Powers, Sam Williams-Dixon and Damarion Witten.

The Buckeyes are the leader in all of those recruitments.

Bringing in and landing Deontae and Devontae is big as the Buckeyes perhaps have now find their ‘captain Buckeye’ — aka the leaders in peer recruiting. In the 2023 cycle it was Luke Montgomery, the year before it was CJ Hicks. Both in-state prospects.

What the Deontae and Devontae bring to the field for Ohio State

Deontae: The 6-foot-7, 285-pound offensive tackle projects as a tackle at the next level. He has put on almost 40 pounds since he camped at Ohio State last June and he continues to push the scale, alledgedly weighing in close to 300 pounds. His footwork continues to improve and that’s what stands out most when watching his tape (see below). As he continues to develop and put weight on to fill out his frame, he has all the potential to become a great tackle for the Buckeyes down the road.

Devontae: Though he’s listed as an offensive tackle, Ohio State’s plan for Devontae is at guard. He’s grown into a 6-foot-6, 270-pound frame and is very athletic for an offensive lineman. Ohio State does like him as a swing lineman as needed, but with more prospects in the fold, the plan is guard. Devontae’s explosion at the next level for one of the best programs in Ohio is a major factor why St. Edward is consecutive Division I state champions.

How the Armstrongs impact 2024 class rankings

The 2024 class remains as the fourth-best class in the country per the On3 Industry Rankings.

Ohio State now has six commitments to the class and Frye nearly has his 2024 haul completed and it’s only March.

The Buckeyes remain the Big Ten’s best with a commanding lead over Michigan, Wisconsin and Penn State.
