Jameer Grimsley remains solid with Alabama commitment

Jameer Grimsley remains solid with Alabama commitment

In early July, Alabama made two key additions to their 2024 class. In a nine-day span, the Crimson Tide landed commitments from cornerback targets Jameer Grimsley and Zabien Brown. On3 ranks both Brown and Grimsley as top-100 prospects.

BamaOnLine recently had an opportunity to catch up with Grimsley in person after a team workout. Grimsley is slated to return to Tuscaloosa this Saturday for Bama’s final cook-out of the summer, and opened up about how things are going with his Alabama commitment.

Champions Cook-Out: Alabama set for final recruiting event

“I’m feeling good,” Grimsley said. “I think God led me to the right path. Just Thank God, Jesus, my Lord and Savior, for everything that’s happened with me. I think I made the right decision.”

Grimsley’s father, Jimmy, is a fan of the nearby Florida Gators. UF did make Grimsley’s top three before his commitment to Bama. In the end, however, Mr. Grimsley thought Alabama was the “right decision” for his son.

“They want what’s best for me, and they think Bama is what’s best for me. I thought Bama is what’s best for me,” Grimsley said of his parents. “At the end of the day, my dad is worried about his son, not his favorite team. So, he thought I should’ve gone to Bama. We were all in agreement.”

Grimsley entered 2023 with just one offer: Rhode Island.

After announcing a transfer to Tampa Catholic High School, his recruitment skyrocketed. The top-80 overall prospect would go on to receive 19 offers the first two months of the year. Alabama dipped into the mix back on Feb. 15.

Two visits to Tuscaloosa later — including a June official visit — and Grimsley was sold on the Crimson Tide.

“Their resume speaks for itself,” Grimsley said. “They’ve put numerous dudes in the league. They’re always putting defensive backs in the league. Coach Saban is a DB Guru. Coach [Travaris Robinson] is also a great coach as well. With the two of them working together, I think I’ll be developed in the best way possible.”

“I think Coach Saban can elevate my game because he elevates everyone’s game,” Grimsley continued. “If he can elevate everyone else’s game, why am I different? You can look at Saban as just a DBs coach as well just because of who he’s had drafted. He’s always with the DBs. I see him in practice. I think it’s just a great pair [with him and T-Rob].”

Jameer Grimsley is in pursuit of an Alabama target

Alabama has recruiting momentum in the Tampa area.

Along with Grimsley, the Crimson Tide hold a commitment from Calvary Christian High’s Joseph Ionata. Last recruiting cycle, Bama signed five-star EDGE Keon Keeley. Grimsley says he is assisting in Alabama’s pursuit of another target from Tampa.

Solomon Williams, I think we’ll be able to get him for sure. He really liked them when I was up there,” Grimsley said. “I just tell him if you want to go to the NFL, it’s probably the best place to go. It’s like a factory for going there. Also, do you want to win? You can get both. Education is pretty good, so you’ll be fine. Playing with the best, being with the best, winning, and the NFL. It’s Bama. I don’t know any other way to describe it.”

Grimsley is a part of a three-cornerback class, with the others being five-star Jaylen Mbakwe and the previously mentioned Zabien Brown. As evidenced by his transfer to Tampa Catholic, Grimsley isn’t afraid of competition, and is excited about the group that Alabama has put together.

“Think it’s going to be a great team,” Grimsley said. “I think we’ll all be some really good corners. I’m going to compete and I will work. I’ve watched them play. Jaylen Mbakwe is fast. A good athlete. Brown has good technique. He’s very technically sound. I think that’s a good trio that we have coming in… we’ll have a corner for each type of receiver.”

In a separate interview with On3 Sports’ Keith Niebuhr on Friday, Grimsley stated that Florida, Florida State, and Penn State are still in touch with him.

As things now stand, however, he is firm in his commitment with the Tide.

“Nick Saban — greatest college football coach of all time,” Grimsley told Niebuhr. “I’m comfortable with Bama. I feel like I’m locked in.”
