5-star LB Sammy Brown recalls telling Georgia about his decision

Jefferson (Ga.) five-star linebacker Sammy Brown is at peace with his commitment to Clemson. It wasn’t an easy process.
Brown had Clemson and Georgia battling heavily late in his recruitment. It wasn’t until his official visit to Clemson that the Tigers pulled ahead and landed the No. 18 overall prospect in the On3 Industry Rankings.
Georgia was the clear number two team for Brown. Brown still remembers the call to Georgia to tell the Bulldogs’ staff that he had chosen Clemson.
“After I committed, called coach (Glenn) Schumann and coach (Kirby) Smart and told them both personally,” Brown said. “I told them both that I really liked them and I appreciated everything that they’d done for me but I chose Clemson.”
There was a positive reception from Smart and Schumann.
“They were both very appreciative of everything that I’ve done and my family has done for them,” Brown said. “There were no hard feelings at all. It was sad, really sad. I definitely felt good about it (my decision).”
Brown and Schumann have had a relationship since Brown was a freshman in high school. It was a hard operation for Brown to tell Schumann. That conversation was one of the hardest Brown had during his process.
He and Schumann had built a strong bond.
“That probably the hardest of all of them was telling coach Schumann,” Brown said. “We’ve had a long process together. We’ve been through this thing together since my freshman year. It was definitely hard to tell but at the end, I was definitely at peace about it.”
Sammy Brown still has Georgia ties
Brown was at Georgia with Jefferson High School’s football team recently for a 7-on-7 camp. Brown was able to see Schumann and talk in person for the first time since he committed to Clemson.
There wasn’t any recruitment talk. There’s still a lot of mutual love and respect between Brown and Georgia’s defensive coordinator.
Brown isn’t in a place to change his mind. He did enjoy speaking with Schumann briefly.
“It was nothing recruiting-wise, trying to get me to flip or anything,” Brown said. “It was just him asking how I’ve been and everything like that.”
Brown bumped into Georgia sophomore safety Malachi Starks earlier this week. The two were high school teammates at Jefferson.
Starks and Brown have been friends for some time. Brown is excited to see how Starks grows as a player entering the 2023 season.
“We talked for a little while, I expect big things out of him, he did a great job last year and I expect him to do an even better job this year,” Brown said. “I’m excited to see what he can do and we get the chance to play each other next year.”
Georgia and Clemson will face off on Aug 31 in Atlanta to kick off the 2024 season.
