Donovan Edwards throws out first pitch ahead of Tigers vs. Angels game

Michigan junior running back Donovan Edwards is one of the most electrifying tailbacks in all of college football. He’s suiting up with Blake Corum this fall to form what should be one of the nation’s top backfield tandems. Edwards endeared himself to the Maize and Blue faithful forever last season for his spectacular performance against Ohio State–when he ripped off 22 carries for a career-high 216 yards and two touchdowns. On Thursday, Edwards took the mound for the Detroit Tigers against the LA Angels, tossing out the first pitch.
Check it out below.
A few people might give him grief for not standing on the actual mound, but nobody will ever doubt Edwards’ ability on the football field. Not only will they not doubt his ability, but it’s hard to not be impressed with his pain tolerance and ability to play through pain. The former four-star tailback is downright electrifying and it sure is going to be exciting to watch him team up with Corum this fall.

Edwards showcased his versatility last season
The injury to star Michigan running back Blake Corum was a tough loss for the Wolverines last season, but Donovan Edwards stepped up to the plate in a major way and delivered in his absence to close out the season.
Edwards showed off his versatility last season, proving to be a threat as a rushing and receiving option for Michigan’s offense. And at the Sound Mind Sound Body camp at Wayne State, Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh spoke about Edwards’ skillset and its impact on their offense.
“His touches could come as we can hand him the ball off, we could toss it to him, we could throw it to him,” Harbaugh said. “He’s definitely somebody that we gotta get the ball to, he’s gotta eat because it makes us better, makes us more dangerous.”
The Wolverines’ offense was plenty dangerous last season, averaging 40.4 points per game on an attack predicated on rushing the football. Michigan ranked fifth in the nation last year in rush yards per game with 238.9, only trailing behind Ole Miss and service academy programs with option offensive schemes.
Most of their production came from a stable of different ballcarriers that bring different skills to the table, including dual-threat quarterback JJ McCarthy.
“That’s hard for a defense to defend that many playmakers, and then JJ, somebody’s gonna handle the ball every down and there’s other guys too,” Harbaugh said.
McCarthy and Edwards were a tough duo to stop to close out the season, as the two combined for 11 total touchdowns in Michigan’s last three games of the year. Corum sustained his injury in Week 14 versus Illinois the week before Michigan’s rivalry game with Ohio State, but Edwards simply could not be stopped in that one as he erupted for a career-high in rushing yardage.
Edwards followed that with a 185-yard day on the ground in the Big Ten Championship game and 119 yards in the College Football Playoff semifinal game versus TCU.
It’ll be interesting to see just how far Edwards, Corum, and McCarthy can carry the Wolverines this season.
