For 5-star Florida Gators QB commit DJ Lagway, a focus on continued improvement

For 5-star Florida Gators QB commit DJ Lagway, a focus on continued improvement

For DJ Lagway, now is not the time to rest on his laurels, to be content with his 5-star status. Instead, his entire focus this summer has been on getting better as a quarterback.

And, the prized Florida Gators commit from Texas thinks that goal has been achieved.

“I feel like I’ve made a huge improvement from last summer to this summer, just with my overall game and reading coverages,” Lagway told Gators Online. “Just being an overall student of the game, making it easier than what it has to be.”

To help with his continued football development, Lagway, a standout  from Willis (Texas), has enlisted the services of two people — Florida offensive analyst for quarterbacks Ryan O’Hara and J.P. Tillman, his private coach.

“They’re really close,” Lagway said of Ohara and Tillman. “They bounce ideas off each other all the time. What I can say about the UF coaching staff is that they like to talk. It’s like a big organization and a big family. Coach Tillman, he loves Coach O’Hara. He’s learned a lot from Coach O’Hara and is excited for the relationship to build.”

According to Lagway, he communicates often with O’Hara via Zoom. Those calls are like classroom sessions and typically take place weekly, he said.

“We have those Zoom calls with them to learn coverages and different types of defenses, fronts, pressure. I’m learning a lot,” Lagway said. “We just watch film over the past year. Go over different run game stuff in the Florida offense. And go over plays and just defensive formations. Things I can translate over to my game as well. They’re really good film sessions. I can’t wait to get there and learn from Coach O’Hara and Coach (Billy) Napier up there.”

DJ Lagway is excited to see what he can do this season

Lagway told Gators Online his increased knowledge of the position is where he has improved the most.

“Really, just managing the game, just overall reading defenses and being comfortable,” Lagway said. “Knowing where the defense is going to be before they’re there. That’s the big thing.”

Now, Lagway expects this development to help him on Friday nights this fall.

Lagway, the No. 30 recruit nationally in the On3 Industry Ranking, threw for 2,081 yards and 24 touchdowns in 2022 while completing 67 percent of his passes. But might he have only scratched the surface last year? That’s certainly the hope for Lagway, who graduates in December and arrives in Gainesville shortly thereafter.

“I think I’ve improved so much since the spring,” he said. “I just can’t wait to put it on the field and show it.”
