Georgia among small group ‘in the mix’ for 2025 OL Mal Waldrep

Phenix City (Ala.) Central three-star offensive lineman Mal Waldrep has always held a special place for Georgia in his recruitment.

Waldrep has the Bulldogs among his top schools early on. Waldrep says there are a group of three schools that are ‘in the mix’ at the moment. He underwent a recruiting surge in the spring. Waldrep saw his offer sheet balloon to nearly 15 offers.

He has Auburn, Clemson and Georgia near the top of his board right now. On3’s Recruiting Prediciton Machine has Auburn as Waldrep’s leader at the moment. The Tigers have a 75.9 percent chance of landing Waldrep according to RPM at the moment.

Waldrep has family ties to Auburn and Clemson.

Georgia has a lot of deep-rooted, personal ties to Waldrep. Waldrep’s first college camp was to Georgia. The 6-foot-4, 280-pound interior offensive lineman camped with the Bulldogs back as an eighth grader.

He returned multiple times over the last few years. Waldrep had intended on not camping at Georgia this summer. He hadn’t had much communication with the Bulldogs’ staff.

Georgia’s interest in Mal Waldrep picked up quickly

Patrick Nix informed Waldrep of Georgia’s interest. He decided to make the trip up to camp for the Bulldogs and earned a long-awaited offer.

“I wasn’t planning on going up to Georgia this summer until the 15th of June, they asked coach Nix if I could come up for a workout,” Waldrep said. “I’ve not really been talking to Georgia until then. I came up, showed out and showed what I can do and I got the offer.”

Waldrep was blown away by the opportunity.

“It was really a great feeling getting an offer from the back-to-back national champs,” Waldrep said. “That was one of the big things that hit me afterward. I was like ‘oh my God, the number one team in the country wants me to come to play for them’. It’s just electric.”

Waldrep made his way around Athens after the visit. He took in some of the sights and sounds. Waldrep came out of Athens intrigued by the atmosphere.

“I really enjoyed hanging around the facility,” Waldrep said. “All of these facilities are absolutely top-notch. I really enjoyed hanging around all the players and really getting the family feel. I rode around in Athens. Athens is a great place. The Georgia fan base is phenomenal.”

Waldrep had the chance to work with Georgia offensive line coach Stacy Searels during his camp workout. He took a liking to Searels and his coaching style as well. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart and Scott Cochran are highlights of Georgia’s coaching staff for Waldrep.

“I’m really liking coach Kirby Smart,” Waldrep said. “I like coach Searels and the way he coaches. I love Scott Cochran.”
