Edwin Spillman finds Tennessee on his heart in commitment to Tennessee

NASHVILLE — Lipscomb linebacker Edwin Spillman is now a Tennessee football commitment. The 4-star defensive playmaker pulled the trigger on Friday afternoon. Before he made things official, he caught up with Volquest to discuss his decision.

“When I really felt like Tennessee was the fit for me was on Sunday or Monday,” Spillman said. “That’s when I felt like God has set it in my heart that this was the place for me.”

One of the main reasons Spillman picked Tennessee was his comfort level on Rocky Top. His brother Nathan is already wearing orange and white, but Tennessee didn’t recruit him like he was a lock to wear orange. They recruited him for him and that made a big impression.

“Tennessee is the place for me,” Spillman said. “The culture and the environment, the coaches have everything I need to be successful and for me to go to the NFL and be great.

“That meant a lot to me because other reporters and coaches were saying your brother is already there, is that where you are going to go, but when people would say that I’d say that not what I’m going there. I wanted to go there because it was the best fit for me.”

Vol linebackers coach Brian Jean Mary was a big part of the relationships he build at Tennessee. Those two vibed extensively through the process.

“Coach BJ is like family to me,” Spillman said. “Throughout this whole process he has been right by my side. They have been recruiting me for a while and I’m close with his family. I just love coach.”

And then there is Josh Heupel, who quickly brought a smile to Spillman’s face.

“Coach, I just love coach,” Spillman said. “He has a great charisma about him. He is a very loud and exciting guy. He is a great coach and mentor to learn from.”

Deciding now, allows Spillman to focus on another state championship run with his teammates. The Vols are getting a kid who loves to play as a team.

“They are getting a playmaker, a physical linebacker and someone who just wants to ne great for their team,” Spillman said.
