Newsstand: Former star Notre Dame OL Zack Martin threatens holdout

Newsstand: Former star Notre Dame OL Zack Martin threatens holdout

Former Notre Dame offensive lineman Zack Martin, a four-year starter for the Irish and a six-time All-Pro for the Dallas Cowboys, is threatening a holdout. ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter reported the news Wednesday morning.

Martin, Schefter said, is unhappy with his contract and might not report to training camp as a result. Most observers believe Martin is the best guard in the NFL, but he’s only the seventh-highest paid player at his position.

Less than an hour after Schefter’s tweet, Martin seemed to confirm it (or at least provided a reason he should be paid more) with a tweet of his own.

Atlanta’s Chris Lindstrom has the largest contract for a guard, with an average annual value of $20.5 million per year. Indianapolis’ Quenton Nelson, also a former Notre Dame star, is close behind at $20 million per year.

Martin’s contract, which he signed in June 2018, pays him $14 million per year. Schefter reported that the Indianapolis native believes he is “woefully underpaid relative to the market.”

Since the Cowboys drafted him No. 16 overall in 2014, Martin’s career has been nothing short of spectacular. The 33-year-old is in the conversation for the top 10 guards of all time.

In his nine-year career, Martin has only missed the Pro Bowl once: 2020, when he only played 10 games. Aside from that season, Martin has played all but three games since he put on a Cowboys uniform.

The Cowboys report to training camp Monday in Oxnard, Calif.
