4-star Auburn DB target Jaylen ‘AP’ Heyward decommits from Georgia

4-star Auburn DB target Jaylen ‘AP’ Heyward decommits from Georgia

Jaylen Heyward, a 4-star defensive back from Rockledge (Fla.), has been committed to Georgia since January of 2023. He now tells On3’s Hayes Fawcett that he has decommitted from Georgia.

Heyward has been an Auburn target for a while. He visited Auburn back in March. He left that visit high on Auburn, and planning to return.

“I loved the visit overall,” Heyward said. “I talked a lot with Coach (McGriff) and Coach Zac and really connected with them, and I really like Coach Freeze and Coach Etheridge. They are real people and made me feel at home.”

At the time, Heyward told Auburn Live that he would officially visit Auburn. That has yet to happen, but still could.

Auburn Live recently reported that Heyward would attend Auburn’s big Cat Weekend. As of right now, that visit is still on. He will now make that visit as an uncommitted prospect.

Two strengths

Why do schools such as Georgia and Auburn covet Heyward? He’s a controlled football player. Everything appears to come very natural for him. Every assignment he’s asked to do, whether it be tackling, playing zone coverage, manning up at corner, or walking up to play near the line of scrimmage, he can do it.

It’s very impressive, that as a smaller guy, he plays physically, but more so bigger than he is. He has no problem covering a bigger player and defending the ball way above his head (similar to Auburn freshman corner Kayin Lee).

One area for improvement

At times, Heyward looks a little too smooth and confident. He does not take plays off, but his effortlessness looks like he’s taking it easy. Alabama corner Koolaid McKinstry had the same look at times. As a freshman McKinstry was picked on early because he looked slower on film. As he was learning the college ropes, he struggled early before figuring it out. Heyward is a similar type player and could fall into the same trap if not careful early on.
