Nightly Recruiting Briefing: Michigan State football recruiting Q&A

In tonight’s Nightly Recruiting Briefing we will discuss the latest Michigan State recruiting questions, submitted on the Underground Bunker message board. We will also take a look at other SpartanMag.com recruiting content.

Are all of the players on campus? Any newcomers standing out in summer workouts?- d_javier_v

Which freshman do you think is most likely to surprise people this year?

To answer the first question, yes, the entire 2023 class, high school and transfers, are now on campus and enrolled. I have heard some good buzz surrounding freshman running back Jaelon Barbarin, who was touted for his speed out of high school. Barbarin also ran track, earning a reputation as one of the fastest recruits in his class. I have heard that speed may be too hard to keep off the field as a freshman. Barbarin enrolled in June, unable to be an early enrollee. That makes it harder to crack the rotation, but with his versatility as a pass catcher, he could find himself in certain offensive packages, and possible on special teams as a freshman.

Are we still recruiting Jamir Benjamin? (Current Northwestern commit)

SpartanMag.com saw Benjamin live at Wayne State University on July 13, as West Bloomfield (MI) High School competed in the SoundMind SoundBody 7on7 showcase event. The 5-foot-10, 170-pounder sported Northwestern gloves, despite the recent program turmoil. Michigan State has not been in much communication with Benjamin since his early commitment to Stanford. As of now Benjamin seems locked in with Northwestern. The Spartans are likely all set at defensive back with five current commitments in the Michigan State 2024 class.

Are there any possible commits before the season starts?-BleedGreen4

Yes, I think Michigan State will enter the season with more than the current number of 12 commitments. Where that addition comes from is currently unclear. The Spartans offered Boston College linebacker commitment Kemori Dixon in June, as they currently work to get him on campus. Michigan State would also like to host Pittsburgh defensive tackle commitment Francis Brewu. Both recruits remain solid to their commitments at the moment. Their recruitments will likely remain quiet for the time being.

The Spartans are also in the running for three-star speed receiver Javarius Green. Green is expected to have a final decision on August 18, currently looking to be leaning towards in-state North Carolina. Michigan State and Alabama are giving the Tar Heels are run at Green, with the Spartans being his only other official visit on June 9. As of now I would give North Carolina the edge, as Michigan State gained an extra month to build momentum, as Green was originally going to decide on July 18.

Michigan State is also in the running for four-star running back Jason Brown of Seattle (WA) O’Dea as he nears his own decision. Brown only took one official visit in June, to East Lansing on the 23rd. The Spartans only gained on their previously held momentum in his recruitment on the official visit. SpartanMag.com sources said Michigan State held a lead for Brown over in-state Washington and rival Oregon coming off the official visit. Brown will take unofficial visits to both Washington and Oregon at the end of July before what could be an August decision.
