Winners and Losers: Kansas State adorned with respect

Winners and Losers: Kansas State adorned with respect

We wrap up the week was in the world of Kansas State sports and college athletics.

WINNERS

1) KANSAS STATE COACHES: Tell me you wouldn’t purchase one of the “Dudes” shirts that the Kansas State basketball coaches were rocking. It was seen on assistant Jareem Dowling’s Twitter account, but it is indeed sharp.

2) ON3: The app has been released, and recent improvements and upgrades to it have made it an even better way to consume K-State content. It is for both Apple and Android users.

3.) K-STATE FOOTBALL FANS: Hey, did you know that football season is just around the corner? Indeed it is. In fact, Kansas State should be back practicing for fall camp in a little over two weeks.

4.) WILDCATS: It was palpable in Arlington. K-State is certainly commanding a lot of respect after winning the Big 12 a year ago and returning many of the pieces that helped them grab that trophy at AT&T Stadium in December. Will they repeat? Nobody knows, but more and more people are considering the possibility. Kansas State quarterback Will Howard even mentioned to us that he kept hearing “Here come the champs” when walking around the home of the Dallas Cowboys for Big 12 Media Days.

5.) ALL-BIG 12 PICKS: We never adorned the K-State players that were chosen as All-Big 12 selections as winners. Kobe Savage was the lone player on the defense, but he was still joined by Kansas State kick and punt returner Phillip Brooks, offensive lineman Cooper Beebe and tight end Ben Sinnott. Additionally, running back Treshaun Ward was named the league’s preseason Newcomer of the Year.

LOSERS

1) DY: Hand up. I have bad days, too. A failure to articulate a detail well enough caused a bit of a stir this week on the Kansas State recruiting front. This is an apology and a promise to learn from mistakes just as I have before.

2) OU: Unlike K-State, Oklahoma is headed in the opposite direction. Though a favorable schedule could bail Brent Venables and company out in 2023, I believe it is quite the sign that they again had just one preseason All-Big 12 pick. At least it wasn’t just the punter like last year. Credit to Texas, who seems to be headed to the SEC with their ducks in a row and ascending when it comes to competing in athletics at a high level. Their commitment has even kicked up a few more notches. In the Sooners’ case, they do not carry the same momentum.

3.) FITZGERALD: Woof. Pat Fitzgerald is out at Northwestern after a hazing investigation uncovered some pretty gruesome details about what was taking place in the program.

4.) NORTHWESTERN: I believe that we can also admit that the Northwestern administration didn’t appropriately handle the situation. After their own investigation, which was checked thoroughly by a law firm and signed off, they chose to only suspend Fitzgerald for two weeks. The president later had to walk that back and look into the events deeper and chose to dismiss the school’s football head coach. Perhaps they reached the correct solution, but the steps to get there were very wonky.

5. NCAA: After months of pleading to the government for federal legislation and assistance on their own problems, the NCAA has finally discovered that it won’t be receiving help from the outside world. Instead, they are forced to take accountability and solve their own problems. The fact that it took this long to reach this conclusion is both ridiculous and amazing.

In case you missed it, be sure to check out Kansas State head coach Chris Klieman addressing his team and the progress that they have made, the higher expectations and more when speaking with the media at Big 12 Media Days.
