5 Things: Significance of Derrion Reid’s visit to Kansas State

1.) He isn’t a five-star, but he’s damn close. Kansas State continues to surge on the recruiting trail, even after the news of them landing Creighton transfer Arthur Kaluma. Georgia native Derrion Reid is currently on an official visit to Manhattan. He’s a Class of 2024 forward prospect that is a four-star by a whisker. Reid is listed as the No. 24 recruit in the entire country for that particular cycle, according to On3. That would make him, if he chooses K-State, one of the three or four best commits of all-time.

2.) Mississippi State has already hosted him on an official visit. Georgia should also get a crack at the Peach State native. But don’t rule out other programs that compose a terrific offer list, including Kansas, LSU, Ohio State, Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Indiana, Tennessee and Creighton. The amount of schools lining up for a chance to land him is a long one, and Kansas State has a tall task in front of them.

3.) Despite that, we can dream a little. It is not impossible that K-State could sign a group that includes Reid, Patrick Ngongba and David Castillo. Of course, Castillo is already committed to the Wildcats and is the No. 35 overall player in the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking (a calculation of all four major recruiting services). We already shared that Reid is No. 24 in On3’s rankings and Ngongba has shot all the way up to No. 37. Three Kansas State commits in the top 37? Yes, please. It’s near impossible to top the class that included Michael Beasley, but that is probably the next best one if Jerome Tang and the Wildcats can pull it off.

4.) We can continue dreaming. Fellow 3MAW co-host Cole Manbeck made me ponder it after a recent recording. What high school recruits has K-State hosted on official visits but committed elsewhere? I realize it is still a small sample size at this point, and a couple are still outstanding (Ngongba), but the only one that came to mind was Shawn Phillips. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong, but he may be it. And he was part of the late and quick scramble after Tang and company began in Manhattan. The track record thus far has been strong, regardless.

5.) Kansas State has showed off their connections in the northeastern part of the country, grabbed a guard out of Chicago, flexed their muscle in Texas and fortified the recruiting territory of St. Louis as a staff. However, one area they are clawing into is Georgia. Not only is Reid from the Peach State but so is main 2025 target Akai Fleming. Do not be surprised if the Wildcats continue to flash in the Atlanta area. It could also be an incentive for them to make a scheduling arrangement with Georgia Tech in the future.
