5-star WR Cam Coleman locks in first two official visits

Phenix City (Ala.) Central five-star wide receiver Cam Coleman is as coveted of a prospect as there is in the 2024 class.

The elite pass-catcher has seen his recruitment explode after his junior season, where he grabbed 31 receptions for 542 yards, a 17.5 average per catch and six touchdowns. A who’s who of programs are now heavily in pursuit of him, including Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, Auburn, Kentucky, LSU, and others. And those are just the programs who have been to his school in the past few weeks.

As he looks to take the next steps in his recruitment, Coleman has locked in his first two official visits for this summer. He’ll visit Clemson (June 2-4) and then head LSU later in the month (June 23-25)

“The best way to describe the last couple of weeks is crazy,” he told On3. “Almost every day, coaches are coming by to check on me. I am still taking things slowly. I am not narrowing things down yet, but I have started to set up official visits.”

Clemson and LSU have made major early impressions

Coleman has been to Baton Rouge and Clemson once each, but those two programs are ones he feels like he very much needs to see again. The atmosphere in Death Valley and the culture of Dabo Swinney’s programs have caught his attention.

“At Clemson, I love the family aspect of it,” he said. “There is a great atmosphere there. The coaching staff is great to be around, especially Coach Swinney. Coach Tyler Grisham is always in contact with me, and we have a great relationship. He always checks on me after spring practice, and he’s a great guy.

… I have always liked Clemson, and Justyn Ross is a player I have looked up and we have talked about Clemson. He told me he would make the same decision today to go there.”

Coleman has also really connected with LSU wide receivers coach Cortez Hankton, and after his last visit to campus was cut short, he wants a chance to see more.

“LSU is a school I have to get back to,” he added. “I was there late and I didn’t get to see everything. I am talking with Coach Hankton almost every other day, and he is always teaching me and helping get better. He sends me tips about my release and he helps me with my routes. I like him as a coach and he knows a lot about receivers.”

Four-star Tigers quarterback commit Colin Hurley has taken an active role in recruiting Coleman while they play on the same 7-on-7 team.

“I have gotten close to Colin Hurley too,” he said. “We talk almost every day and we have a great relationship. We have built that chemistry and that does help LSU.”

Other schools in the mix for official visits with Cam Coleman

While those two programs are his first scheduled OVs, they won’t be his only ones. Kentucky, Auburn and Florida State are also in contention, he said. He is looking at visiting the Wildcats in June between his other two visits, but he’ll likely hold off on seeing the Tigers and Seminoles until the fall.

“Auburn will definitely get an official visit,” he added. “I am not 100% sure when, but probably during the season. I probably have the best relationship with Marcus Davis. We talk about everything, especially stuff outside of football. They are recruiting me the hardest. I have a bond with Coach Davis and Hugh Freeze always talks about he wants to be the head coach that I talk to the most. Auburn is really coming after me hard.”

The Wildcats and Seminoles don’t have the same proximity to home that Auburn does, but each of his visits to Tallahassee and Lexington made him want to come back again.

“Florida State and Kentucky are both great schools that are recruiting me hard,” Coleman said. “I was at Florida State for the Georgia Tech game, and things just clicked. I have been talking to Coach Ron Dugans a lot, too. … Kentucky has Coach Scott Woodard and Coach Liam Andrews recruiting me. I have been there for a Junior Day and I just felt good up there. Kentucky is showing me they want me.”

Before any of those other trips take place though, he’ll visit Georgia for the first time next weekend. The Bulldogs offered him during basketball season, and he wants a chance to see what thinks are like in Athens and would potentially consider them for an official visit down the line.

Right now, Cam Coleman’s plans are to make a decision this fall during his high school season.
