Continuing our series of closer looks at the five-star recruits Oregon has been linked to in the 2024 class. This time we turn our attention to IMG Academy (Fla.) defensive lineman David Stone.
Like the others in this series, Stone has his choice of every school in the country. He’s one of the highest ranked defensive lineman in the country.
Stone is yet another big swing for Dan Lanning and this staff. Let’s take a closer look at where things stand today for the coveted defensive lineman.
Current On3 RPM Leader: Oklahoma 79.6%
No. of Oregon Visits: 3
Official Visit Date: None
Contenders: Oklahoma, Miami, Florida, Michigan State, Texas A&M, LSU, Oregon, USC
Jhop’s Pick Today: Oklahoma
Oregon’s Chances Today: 25%
Why Oregon:
One of the 5-stars I feel like Oregon has a legitimate shot with. Now don’t get me wrong, Oklahoma is going to be really tough to beat. He’s been to Norman at least a dozen times and Venables is able to close on some top defensive prospects. Especially those originally from the state.
Oregon has to get him back on campus. No question. If they don’t that 25% plummets immediately. But I get the sense Stone really likes Oregon. And as you can see Oregon has commit Xadavien Sims working on Stone to help him establish an Oregon-Oklahoma pipeline.
This feels like one of those Dan Lanning will pour a lot of effort into. He doesn’t have an official visit set for Oregon yet but I feel confident Oregon is working on that with the five-star.
This would be a big get for Lanning, Lupoi and Tuioti in this class.
Final Thoughts:
I don’t know why but it really feels like Stone is one we need to keep tabs on. Way more than Dylan Stewart. I’m not saying Oregon leads or anything crazy like that. But I do think Oregon can match up with Oklahoma, assuming they lead a little more favorably than say a Georgia or Bama.
Until we see him on campus for an official, it will be an uphill battle for the Ducks.
On3 Scouting Report
Twitched up disruptor along the interior defensive line who has ridiculous short area quickness and burst. Tested extremely well during the summer camp circuit prior to his senior season. Jumped 28 inches in the vertical, ran a 5.00 40-yard dash and ran an impressive 4.41 shuttle. And did all of that at 6-foot-4, nearly 280 pounds with 11-inch hands. Violent off the snap, can split gaps with ease. Shoots his hands quickly and with precision off the line. Excellent hand usage and very slippery as a pass rusher. Makes it tough for offensive linemen to ever get a hand on him. Stout against the run, excellent ability to disengage from blockers. Not looking to stack and shed, wants to get off of blocks immediately. Can convert speed to power, strong bull rusher as well. Can play a bit erratic at times and work himself out of plays. Just needs to play with more discipline and see the field better, but will come with time. High floor prospect who will always be a threat on passing downs. Will become a complete three-down player in no time. Ceiling is through the roof with high first round NFL potential. Transferred to IMG Academy after his first two seasons at Del City HS in Oklahoma.
