5-star QB DJ Lagway wants Florida to ‘have the No. 1 class in the country’

5-star QB DJ Lagway wants Florida to ‘have the No. 1 class in the country’

Stanford, Texas A&M and USC are some schools still recruiting Willis (Texas) five-star quarterback DJ Lagway, who committed to Florida on Dec. 7. However, Lagway is “100% locked in” with the Gators and working to bring top recruits with him to Gainesville.

Lagway already has a list of priority Florida targets. They include Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna Prep Five-Star Plus+ wide receiver Jeremiah Smith (Ohio State commit), Duncanville (Tex.) Five-Star Plus+ EDGE Colin Simmons and Longview (Texas) four-star defensive lineman Dealyn Evans (Texas A&M) commit.

“I want to build it up and have the best players around me and have the No. 1 class in the country,” Lagway told On3’s Chad Simmons at the On3 NIL Elite Series presented by Mizuno.

According to Lagway, he is “active” in communicating with multiple players. The 6-foot-2.5, 230-pound signal-caller also speaks with multiple Florida staffers, including head coach Billy Napier, about who the Gators want to add this cycle.

Right now, Florida’s 2024 recruiting class ranks No. 4 in the 2024 On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings and No. 3 in the SEC. Lagway’s message to recruits considering the Gators is clear.

“Florida has the best fanbase in the country,” said Lagway, the No. 23 overall prospect and No. 3 quarterback in the 2024 On3 Industry Ranking. “I feel like you have everything you need in Gainesville and you can win the national championship. You can be anything you want to be there. I feel like we have all the resources and all the talent, honestly, to do it.”

Recruiting for Florida is a ‘real good blessing’ for Lagway

Despite being pledged to Florida, Stanford, Texas A&M and USC are not giving up on landing Lagway. According to the Lone Star State native, the Aggies are recruiting him harder than ever before.

Texas A&M’s efforts picked up around the arrival of offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino to College Station.

“I think he’s a good guy,” Lagway said. “… He came to a few of my workouts.”

Regarding USC, Lagway is recognizing what head coach Lincoln Riley is building in Los Angeles. Yet the five-star is focused on the Gators. Going forward, he does not plan to visit anywhere else except for Gainesville.

“It’s a real good blessing to be recruiting for the class and I’m really trying to get to know all these players,” Lagway said. “A lot of these players are going to be in the league one day and I’m getting to know them at a young age.”
