5-star OT, nation’s No. 1 recruit Jackson Cantwell locks in next Michigan visit
Jackson Cantwell visited Michigan late last year, and the Five-Star+ offensive tackle has officially locked in his next trip to Ann Arbor. The No. 1 recruit in the country will spend March 22 with the Wolverines, the final visit in a series of three stops this spring.
After dropping a Top 6 of Georgia, Michigan, Oregon, Missouri, Ohio State and Miami Feb. 2, the lineman set up his spring travel schedule. He will spend March 17-18 with Miami and March 20-21 with Ohio State before traveling to Ann Arbor.
Cantwell also teased his upcoming official visit dates. Going into the spring, it looks like Michigan will likely host the towering 6-7.5, 305-pound tackle from Nixa (MO) High this summer. The Wolverines made a strong push in his recruitment to contend with the perceived favorites in Cantwell’s recruitment— Georgia and Oregon.
Offensive line coach Grant Newsome is his primary recruiter and visited him during the January evaluation period. Head coach Sherrone Moore will also play a critical role in his recruitment. They connected during his December trip to Ann Arbor, and Moore visited also stopped by his school last month.
“Coach Moore has a vision that he wants the offensive line to be the heart and soul of the team,” Cantwell said. “Coming from being that (offensive line) coach, he knows why prioritizing that can be successful long-term. I think that’s exactly what he’s doing right now — getting his offensive line going, so it can be the best line possible.”
His December trip to Ann Arbor was his first visit with the Big Ten program, and he caught up with The Wolverine afterwards.
“It was a fun visit,” Cantwell said. “I got to meet the coaches and see all the facilities. I talked to the strength coach and the personnel people. I think the campus is pretty nice. It looks like a good place to live. It was an enjoyable visit. I didn’t get to see The Big House because I was short on time. I definitely want to do that next time. I will probably be back. Maybe for a spring practice.”
The son of two former USA Olympians, Cantwell is perhaps the most coveted prospect in America and holds an offer from just about every program in the country. He has taken five trips to see Missouri, his in-state program. Georgia, Ohio State and Nebraska have all hosted him four times as well. This will be his second trip to Michigan.
