5-star cornerback DJ Pickett sets Florida Gators official visit
ZEPHYRHILLS, FL. — On Wednesday, On3 reported that No. 1-ranked cornerback DJ Pickett was looking to add Florida to his official visit schedule.
Now, roughly 48 hours later, the 5-star prospect has finalized that multi-day visit with the Gators.
“That’s going to be for the Miami game,” Pickett told Gators Online after his scrimmage on Friday.
The date for the OV is Aug. 31 and the weekend of Florida’s season opener against Miami. In addition to that, Pickett has strong family ties to Miami and saw his cousin, Booker Pickett, sign there last cycle.
That should make a very interesting and important weekend for everyone involved.
“The people around the building are good people,” Pickett said of Florida. “Also, (secondary) coach (Will) Harris is a good coach. Why not give them a chance and make the most of all my opportunities?
“It’s a good atmosphere. I want to be part of an atmosphere like that and a team, like, they are on a mission to get back.”
Will Harris is eager to make a statement in this recruitment
As for Harris, there is no doubt he has some big shoes to fill. That is largely due to Florida’s decision to part ways with Corey Raymond, who is back at LSU and has the Tigers near the very top for Pickett.
So far though, the returns on Harris have been nothing but positive.
“It’s just a natural connection I have with him,” Pickett said of Harris. “I haven’t seen how he coaches in person, but I’ve seen some videos of how he coaches and I like that.
“He’s just being himself. When he came in, he already talked to me. It’s not really on some, ‘Oh, we got to hurry up.’ It’s on some, ‘Now I’m here and we are going to build this relationship.’”
As expected, Billy Napier is involved with the All-American defender as well.
“We are in a group chat here and there,” said Pickett. “He messages me here and there, but it’s good vibes when I see him.”
Pickett has five official visits scheduled altogether
Additional official visits on the calendar for Pickett include LSU (May 31), Georgia (June 7), Miami (June 14) and Oregon (June 21).
The On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine slightly favors the Hurricanes over the Tigers, followed by Georgia and Oregon, respectively, but there is not much separation percentage wise.
As for the Gators, how much ground do they need to make up heading into the summer?
“I mean, I don’t really know (laughter). That’s a question I can’t really answer,” Pickett replied.
Pickett is not ruling out a trip to Gainesville before his Aug. 31 official visit as well. He has to check his schedule but believes Zephyrhills will be playing in one of Florida’s 7-on-7 tournaments.
