4-star WR Marcus Harris goes in-depth on top five schools
Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei four-star wide receiver Marcus Harris is set to be the latest high-profile pass-catcher to come out of the touted Golden State high school program.
Like those who have came before him, Harris has built an impressive offer sheet and is working to decide between some of the best programs in the nation. Earlier this month, he announced that he was down to five schools.
Alabama, Georgia, Oregon, Tennessee and Texas are at the top for the 5-foot-11, 180-pounder. He’s been to each campus before and will return to all five for official visits, beginning with a trip to Athens in May.
Harris is eyeing a commitment before the beginning of his senior season at Mater Dei. Officials will likely play a major role for the four-star — who is looking to find the right fit at the next level. California connections, offensive scheme and relationships with the coaches will all help Harris come to his eventual decision.
Harris is the No. 153 overall prospect and No. 15 WR in the 2025 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He joined ‘The Five Star Flex’ to break down his top five schools with On3’s Phillip Dukes.
Harris details his interest in his top five
Texas: “Really just the whole coaching staff, every time I go up there I talk to literally everybody, they make sure they say what’s up, ask how it’s going, things like that. I really feel like a lot of them don’t just do that because it’s their job, I really feel like they want to do that. Coach (Chris) Jackson, that’s my guy. He wasn’t the first guy to offer me, but once he got the job he hit me up, we immediately clicked like that. We come from the same place, went to Mater Dei, we have a lot of mutual so that’s one good thing about them. Coach Sark, you know, offensive guru, he has a lot of receivers that’s come out, about to have Xavier Worthy and AD Mitchell come out, so that’s a staff I really like, for sure.”
Oregon: “Same thing with them, they’re really related to Texas, but that was my dream school growing up. That was probably the first college team I seen, the jerseys, the fast way they play offense, speed option, all that. That’s a team I’ve been watching for a minute, always been a fan of. Everybody has their school they’ve been liking, that’s the school I’ve always dreamed of playing for. Coach (Dan) Lanning, that’s a coach right there, you can’t get a lot of head coaches like that. He’s always talking to the players, he’s a player’s coach, for sure. A lot of players that went to my school go there and they tell me about him a lot, saying he’s a great coach and things like that. Coach Junior Adams, that’s my guy. I talk to him, too. He’s a chill dude, I like that cause I feel like I’m a chill guy myself. That whole staff is cool.”
Tennessee: “I just started watching them play, with Jalin Hyatt and things like that, but they for sure have a Cali connection. They really, really love to throw the ball, that’s one thing for me, I love going out there catching deep balls. Their offense is really trying to get receivers into space, I feel like that could be a spot for me. They’re just now starting to get receivers out, so that’s a good thing, for sure. The staff, every time I go up there, cool all the time. That’s a staff that I like. Coach (Kelsey) Pope, Coach (Josh) Huepel, they have some Cali connections.”
Alabama: “I just got the offer in February, they came from Washington — honestly, Washington would’ve been in there, but the whole staff moved, so once they got to Bama they made sure, they made me feel like a priority, literally called me up. All them dudes came up to the school and were able to see me, I was able to go out there and visit. I really like the school, the staff is just one of one, they just came off a (national championship) run. They’re not trying to go back down, they’re still trying to go up. With them going to Bama they can really keep going and get the guys they really want, cause you know at Washington a lot of people were iffy about it.
…Now they’re at Bama and they have the resources and all of that. I like the coaching staff, Coach (JaMarcus) Shepard, that’s my guy, you see the things he’s been doing with receivers, I think three with 1,000 yards, something like that. Those guys weren’t high-ranked, either. He built them up and developed them, that’s one thing I really want is to get developed. They’ve got the tools … that’s a program that I’ve been liking for a minute, it’s a dream school for sure.”
Georgia: “That was one of my first big offers. Went out there to camp the start of my sophomore year and that’s when my recruitment really took off. Got to see the facilities, things like that. Coach Kirby Smart, you know, he’s that guy. The whole staff is welcoming. They had Coach (Bryan McClendon) before, but he went to the NFL, so at that point I thought it was kinda over with Georgia, cause it’s kind of too late in my recruitment to build a relationship, but I didn’t know that, until Coach (James) Coley came. He was previously there when George Pickens and all them dudes were there when they won the national championship.
…They had a great group of receivers come out, (Pickens) Mecole Hardman and some other dudes. I started building a relationship with Coach Coley like that, I took a visit up there, got to meet him for the first time, got to see practice for the first time, it was good. All the coaches are cool like that, they for sure have a lot of Cali connections, so that’s good also. Being able to talk to Coach Smart, he’s a legend for sure and he’s always going to compete for a national championship and that’s something I’ve always wanted to do.”
