4-star WR Lawayne McCoy still committed to Florida State, but Miami remains in picture

4-star WR Lawayne McCoy still committed to Florida State, but Miami remains in picture

Florida State has remained Miami (Fla.) Central 2024 four-star receiver Lawayne McCoy’s top school since he committed to the Seminoles April 13, but Miami has more than held its ground for the top-250 prospect.

McCoy continue to work to flip the 6-foot, 170-pound receiver, who says he’ll visit for an upcoming game. He also says Miami’s staff has recruited McCoy the hardest of the remaining schools attempting to pull him away from Tallahassee, which includes Penn State, Oregon, UCF, Louisville, West Virginia and several other programs. Miami is still hoping to bring him to Coral Gables for an in-season official visit.

“I feel like coach (Mario) Cristobal, he knows what he’s doing,” McCoy said. “He knows that winning mentality, and I feel like he knows how to bring it back to Miami. I feel like they’re going to do great and put up some good numbers.”

McCoy plans to attend this year’s Miami-Florida State game in Tallahassee as a Seminoles recruit, and ilke many recruits, he wants to see if Miami can take a substantial step forward on the field this season overall off a 5-7 campaign last year where the offense struggled mightily.

He feels expectations for Miami should be high and that Miami will ultimately win “about eight or nine” games.

“I’d say it’s really just to dominate every game and show that Miami is back,” McCoy said. “That Miami is going to be a winning team this year and go out and dominate.”

However, McCoy has remained impressed by Florida State and loved what he saw on his game visit for the Seminoles’ season opener against LSU, which the Noles won 45-24. Watching FSU’s offense shine in the national spotlight encouraged McCoy and reminded him why he committed to the Seminoles in April over more than a dozen other programs. So it’s an uphill battle right now … but Miami is intent on keeping top Miami Central talent home.

CaneSport’s Take

FSU remains the undisputed leader for McCoy, but don’t be stunned if Miami makes things interesting by cobbling together some signature wins this fall. A few major victories in nationally-televised games, plus increased fan interest and community buy-in to this year’s team, could make things tighter down the stretch, although FSU will be hard to beat. Miami’s game against Florida State in Tallahassee could be a game to watch in this recruitment.
