4-star WR JJ Harrell locked in with Mississippi State, Georgia pushing

Sardia (Miss.) North Panola four-star wide receiver JJ Harrell is already pledged to the in-state Mississippi State Bulldogs.

The No. 173 overall prospect in the On3 Industry Rankings committed to back on June 20 after originally being committed to Tennessee. The four-star is locked in at the moment. He called his recruitment closed over the summer.

“I’m committed to State at this point, and everyone knows that,” Harrell said.

There is a school that has intensified their pursuit. It’s also a school Harrell answers the phone for. The team’s wide receiver coach has been a big part of that.

“I answer the phone for Georgia and stuff like that because coach (Bryan) McClendon has always been one of those genuine coaches,” Harrell said. “I always listen when he talks. It’s over 1 million kids in the world that want to play college football and all of them don’t get that chance. I’ve got over 30 offers; God blessed me with a chance to go to over 30 schools.”

McClendon is working to get the four-star on campus at some point ‘soon’.

Wide receiver a position of need at Georgia

McClendon has been working to get Harrell on campus for a visit. The Bulldogs recently lost a wide receiver commitment from four-star Ny Carr.

That has been part of Georgia’s pitch since their reconvening with Harrell.

“He was telling me all the opportunities at stake,” Harrell said. “He told me about the lack of wide receiver spots and that I could come in and contribute and all this. It was cool. I love when people think that I’m a great player. I’ve put in countless hours. It feels good to get rewarded, but you’ve got to keep going and be humble. There’s more work out there to do and more things to improve on. I can’t settle.”

Georgia’s recent winning history is also a major piece of having Harrell’s ear for now.

“The last two years, Georgia has won national championships,” Harrell said. “That’s the best team in the world. Women lie, men lie, numbers don’t lie. You really can’t deny that they’re one of those schools.”

Harrell has also heard from Georgia’s future signal caller, five-star quarterback Dylan Raiola. Raiola has been touching base with Harrell for the last two weeks or so.

He’s already assembled a pitch for Harrell.

“He just told me who he was and said he wanted to reach out and see how the season had been going,” Harrell said. “He’s just telling me what I could do to be better. He was like ‘you know how crazy we would be at UGA’. He was like we could be another Jamar Chase and Joe Burrow. He’s recruiting me hard. He said he needs that one guy that you can go to whenever you need him. He said I’m that guy.”

Harrell couldn’t hide being flattered hearing praise from one of the nation’s best 2024 signal callers.

“I support him, I watch his highlights on YouTube and he’s a great quarterback,” Harrell said. “To hear that from him, it was cool.”

The current iteration of Georgia’s offense has been something of note for Harrell as well. Georgia is 10th in passing yards per game in the nation.

Harrell can’t deny that production from Georgia’s passing attack.

“They’re top 10 in the country in passing,” Harrell said. “So, for a receiver when you see that it’s crazy, they’re airing the ball out. That’s impressing me a little bit… Men lie, women lie, numbers don’t lie.”
