4-star QB commit Walker White helping coaches with ‘important night’ after camp performance

AUBURN – The Tigers’ top commit and quarterback of the class, 4-star Walker White, was back on campus Friday to show his skills and take coaching from his future coaches.

He performed well, spent time with coaches, and also recruited the receivers that were in attendance.

White had plenty to say after the day. He will be hanging out with official visitors as they arrive in Auburn Friday night.

Thoughts on Cain and Simmons

Q: How did it go?

Walker White: “It was fun, I just loved working with Coach Montgomery. One of my biggest reasons for coming here– someone asked me when I was in line, like, ‘you’re committed here right?’ I said, I just wanted to compete. This staff besides Coach Montgomery hadn’t seen me throw yet, so I just wanted to come show them my arm and show them what I can do. How I can improve and just compete with the guys. Now I’m going to stay here a little bit. I just wanted to get in front of the receivers and running backs and see if we can’t get a couple of them on the plains.”

Q: What did you think of Bryce Cain?

Walker White: “Man he was good. He just was flying. His dad, who was a quarterback at Miami, he came up to me, he was like ‘man you got a pistol.’ I was like yeah, I got a pistol, but I mean, this guy’s got wheels on him man. He was just really fast, and I got to meet Bryce. He’s got a really good attitude. He was smiling, easy to talk to. I’m actually going to hit him up after I leave. I’m going to try to get him here and get some dogs around me. Bo Nix once told me, ‘You’re only as good as the guys around you.’ I’m just really trying to work on that.”

Q: What did you think of Malcolm Simmons?

Walker White: He was really good. He can fly. Gosh, it’s just the difference between a couple of guys that you get around that makes the difference between a national championship and just a winning season. Those guys are so important to me and the coaches are expressing what they want out of me. We’re just trying to work together. I see myself as an extension of the coaching staff on the field and in the recruiting world. I’m just trying to get guys like Malcolm Simmons and Bryce Cain here.”

Thoughts on Thorne and ‘important night’ ahead

Q: What did you think about the way Coach Montgomery coached you during reps?

Walker White: I loved it. What I was trying to do when he was coaching was picture myself here. When I was looking at him and paying attention to him, it just felt right. When I turned to Coach Stone, turned around and listened to Coach Austin, all of these guys are pouring into me, trying to grow me. That’s one of the biggest reasons I’m going to come here. I know I’m going to get developed. There’s so many coaches that teach me and grow my football skills and knowledge. There’s so many different minds pouring into one athlete and that is really special.

Q: What’s the plan with the official visitors tonight?

Walker White: So I’m going to go grab some dinner with my buddies, then I’m going to meet the official visitor guys, hang out with them, take some pictures and we’re going to have a blast. We’re going to get some music going, I know they’re going to have a dinner and then we’re just going to hang around. I don’t know what the plan is after that, but I know some of the players currently on the team are going to hang with us. Some of the positional guys will be with us just giving them a feel of what it’s like to be on the team. So it’s just going to be an important night, guys like Daniel Hill, Coen Echols, Alvin Henderson. Those guys are here and more. I’m excited to be around them and just create those relationships. That’s the biggest thing I’ve taken to heart. I know Daniel Hill released his top 8 and Auburn was one of them. So, I’m just going to try to get him to narrow that down to a top 1. That’d be a huge grab.

Q: Have you met Payton Thorne yet?

Walker White: I got to watch him at the 6 am run this morning, I got to watch them as they got through their conditioning. They threw some routes on air, I was paying attention to him. He can rip it, he’s really good. I’ve heard great things about him and all the quarterbacks in the room. There’s never going to be a player on the team that isn’t very skilled. You’re going to have to try to outwork them. It’s going to take 100% of myself to earn my way on the field at some point. Payton, Holden, Jackson, all of those guys are really skilled.. Robby. And they have shown interest in me. It means a lot to me. But, Thorne, he can rip it. He has a great ball and is really accurate.
