4-star OT Jaelyne Matthews will take official visits before he makes his decision
Toms River (N.J.) Toms River North offensive tackle Jaelyne Matthews was thinking about committing before taking his official visits, but he has decided to proceed with official visits before he makes that decision.
The four-star will visit Rutgers this weekend before heading south to Miami on June 7. On June 14, he will visit Tennessee. Ole Miss could get an official visit from the No. 300 prospect in the On3 Industry Ranking too.
The Rebels offered Matthews on April 22 and communication has picked up.
“Ole Miss got in a little later than other schools on my list, but I like the football program and how Lane Kiffin coaches, so I want to check them out,” Matthews told On3. “I have never been there, but I am talking with coach John Garrison and he seems like a great guy. Now we are talking about an official visit, so we will see how it goes.”
The 6-foot-5, 275-pounder is still learning about Ole Miss, but he knows a lot about the Scarlet Knights, Hurricanes and Vols. He has visited each school this spring and Rutgers is the school he has visited over 10 times.
“Me going to Rutgers this weekend is not just a time filler for me. I have serious interest in them. They have been recruiting me since my 8th grade year and my relationships are unlike the ones I have with any other coaches. This weekend I will see how I feel around other recruits and commitments, but my interest is serious.”
Miami has had Matthews on campus once. He has visited Tennessee twice. He is ready to see each program again.
“With Miami, I just want to hang out with the coaches more and see more of the campus. My relationship with coach Mario Cristobal and Alex Mirabal is strong and I love how they work together with the offensive linemen. That is what I like most about Miami.
“I have seen and heard everything at Tennessee. I just want to spend more time with the coaches. The fan base, my connection with coach Glenn Elarbee and how they have recruited makes Tennessee stand out.”
No date is set, but a decision is likely later this summer.
“Whenever I find the right place, I will commit,” Matthews said. “I just want to take these visits and make sure I find the right fit. The relationships are important and it is just how I feel at these schools. I don’t want to go in the Transfer Portal, so I have to make sure I find the best fit. That is when I will commit.”
