4-star LB Tyler Lockhart on his surprise Auburn commitment: ‘I couldn’t wait any longer’

Four-star linebacker Tyler Lockhart made a surprise commitment to Auburn on Monday night.

The No. 6 overall recruit in Mississippi didn’t tease his announcement. He never set a date or time. He just committed.

And he had a good reason for doing it when he did.

“I couldn’t wait any longer,” he told Auburn Live. “I just know it’s the place for me. Love everything about it.”

Lockhart, who attends Winonah Secondary School, chose Auburn over Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Alabama, LSU and Georgia, among many others. He visited Auburn on March 30 and knew when he left that the Tigers were high on his list.

“I had been thinking hard about (committing) the past couple of weeks,” he said. “When I went there (in March), I loved the practice and the people. I loved everything. I just decided to go ahead and commit.”

DJ Durkin played big role in Lockhart’s commitment

Auburn defensive coordinator/linebackers coach DJ Durkin played a big factor in Lockhart’s decision. The two have developed a strong bond since Durkin came to Auburn in late January.

“I think he’s a great coach and a great person,” Lockhart said. “We have a good relationship. He’s just a good guy and is easy to talk to.”

Lockhart soon will get another chance to meet and speak with Durkin. He’s set to take an official visit to Auburn June 14-16. He also will take other visits.

“I will take other visits,” he said. “I’ll take an official visit to (Mississippi) State and I may take one to Ole Miss.

“But I feel great about my Auburn commitment. I feel like it’s the right place for me.”

Lockhart will turn his attention to other recruits. He’ll be working to get others to join him in Auburn’s 2025 recruiting class. One guy at the top of his list is five-star wide receiver Caleb Cunningham, who is the No. 1-ranked recruit in Mississippi.

“I’m going to try,” he said. “Hopefully, he’ll come with me.”
