4-star EDGE C.J. May talks potential top schools, commitment timeline
Highland Home (Ala.) four-star EDGE C.J. May came off the board quick last fall, as he announced his commitment to Notre Dame.
After continuing to work through his recruitment and giving it some thought, the 6-foot-3.5, 220-pounder opted to back off his pledge to the Fighting Irish this February. Now, he’s once again fielding interest as one of the top prospects in Alabama this cycle.
May has taken spring visits and is now locking in his official visit dates. This summer will play a major part in helping the blue-chipper whittle things down, but he’s in no rush to make another decision.
“After my officials in June, I’ll probably drop a top five, top six, just depends on how my officials go,” May said on ‘The Five Star Flex’. “Then I’m just gonna go from there, you know. Let God do the work, you can’t rush it or you’ll make a bad decision. I feel like on my last commitment I rushed it — I have nothing bad to say about the Notre Dame staff, but I feel like it just wasn’t the right spot for me at the time.”
May is the No. 259 overall prospect and No. 28 EDGE in the 2025 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He’s also the No. 16 player in Alabama.
May discusses some of his top schools entering the summer
While May is yet to release a new top schools list since decommitting from Notre Dame, there are plenty of programs that are catching his eye. He discussed six of those potential contenders with On3’s Phillip Dukes.
Washington: “It’s a consistent program, they develop football players. I’ve talked to Coach (Jacob) Crawford and Coach (Jason) K(aufusi) about the players they’ve produced. just going back and researching it all, they can definitely produce talent. It’s a chance to be on the West Coast, I’m from Bama, it may be something I like, something different for me. I just feel like I could see myself there in the future if stuff was to work out, and I don’t think I’d regret it.”
Vanderbilt: “The way I look at Vanderbilt, It’s life after football. Football isn’t always forever. I feel like if I can get a Vanderbilt diploma or degree, that’s gonna take me a lot further than football ever would. Football only lasts so many years of your life, you’ve got a lot of life after football. If I get that degree, after football I’m set.”
Ole Miss: “Me and Coach (Randall) Joyner have had a relationship since my freshman year. I used to go camp for him just for the fun of it just because I loved Ole Miss as a kid. I fell in love with the relationship we have, cause It’s a real tight relationship. We still text to this day all the time. It’s always a blessed opportunity to have that relationship with him because you see where I’m at now with them possibly one of my top schools. Coach Joyner’s always been a real honest guy with me, he’s told me multiple times what I need to do and every time I see him he’s more and more proud of me.”
Syracuse: “The new coaching staff, Coach Fran (Brown) and all the coaches up there, me and Coach Nick Williams have a tight relationship. It was kinda later in my process, but it was a quick connection-type bond. Coach Nick’s one of them younger coaches and younger kids relate better with younger coaches. It’s been a ball creating a relationship with him cause he’s such a natural, funny guy. I’ve visited up there twice already. Every time I go up there it feels normal, it feels like I’m back at home at Bama. Coach Elijah Robinson, then you’ve got Coach Fran, also. Coach Fran is different. I haven’t met a head coach like him yet.”
Louisville: “Louisville’s one of the other schools I’ve had my eye on as a kid. Now having the opportunity to explore it. Coach (Mark) Hagen does a great job of recruiting me, then I’ve got all the other coaches around it. Coach (Jeff) Brohm also does a fantastic job of recruiting me. His son, Brady, also has a tight relationship with me. We text and stuff every day. It’s a nice city, nice place. I feel like I’d be comfortable playing there.”
Auburn: “I’ve got family there, one of my 2025 linebackers, (Auburn commit) JaKaleb Faulk, that’s my second cousin, current (Auburn) player right now Keldric Faulk is also my cousin. We’re all a tight family. It’s family, going into college football, the opportunity to play with them, that’s major. It’d be a dream, all three of us, they call it the ‘Highland Home Trifecta.’”
