4-star Derrion Reid talks Mississippi State, Georgia, and Kansas State; breaks down recruitment

Derrion Reid jumped to No. 24 in the recent 2024 On3 150. The 6-foot-7 wing from Grovetown (GA) High, is averaged 17.9 points and 6.5 rebounds while shooting 57.0 percent and 42.3 percent from three for Team Thad on Nike’s EYBL Circuit.

“I’m very versatile, a true two-way player who plays both ends of the floor,” Reid told On3. “At my size, being able to handle the ball, bring it up the court. My shot continues to get better, and I’m becoming a more complete player. LeBron is my favorite player, but 35 is on my back for Kevin Durant. I like both of them, their size and what they can do.”

On3 spoke with four-star Derrion Reid after a recent live viewing to talk recruitment.

Reid talks official visits

“I’ve only been to Mississippi State so far for an official visit,” Reid said. “I’m going to Georgia in a couple of weeks, at the end of June. A Kansas State visit is coming up soon, too; we are setting up that date right now. I’ll try and plan the rest for after Peach Jam.”

Mississippi State: “My relationship with them has been huge. The connection I have with all the coaches there, all the assistant coaches. The whole staff there made me feel welcome. It’s far away, but that doesn’t matter to me. There aren’t many distractions down there.

“Just being around the coaches was the best part for me. I went to a baseball game with them, and we ate breakfast and lunch with them. We went over to the coach’s house on my visit. Just being around Coach (Chris) Jans was the most memorable part for me.”

Georgia: “It’s the home state school. They’ve been on me for as long as I can remember, like last summer. They have kept recruiting me hard. Coach (Mike) White wants me to come in and be a big guard. Show that I can be an immediate impact player there. I think I’m going there on June 20.”

Kansas State: “Every time they come to my games, they are four deep. They text me almost every other day. We were supposed to do a home visit, but they had another recruit commit they had to go see. It’s tight with them, we’re in contact all the time, and things are great.”

Reid talks recruitment

“I’m talking with Ohio State and Kansas about visits,” Reid said. “I’m talking with Alabama, Florida State, and LSU too.”

Kansas: “I enjoyed watching them play last season. I can see where my style of play fits with what they do. I want to get to know the coaches there more and see more on their style of play, see more things like that.”

Ohio State: “I’m just now developing a connection with their coach and assistant coaches. So I’m still feeling them out more.”

Alabama: “The coach, the connection with Nate Oats is strong. I think I had one game when I air-balled a three. I talked to him after that game, and he asked me why didn’t I shoot after I air-balled that three. That shows he has trust in me. And before he left, Antoine Pettway was like my brother. When the new assistant coaches were hired, they came by my school like the next week. The connection is just strong over there, I want to go see where I can fit in and play.”

Florida State: “I can see where I can fit in there and make an immediate impact. My style of play fits their style. Their staff, Coach (Steve) Smith, has been on me since way back when. We’ve been able to keep the connection tight.”

LSU: “It’s farther away from home, but the play style and the coaches I’ve connected with. I talk with Coach (Casey) Long and Ronnie (Hamilton), both of them quite a bit. Their playstyle is free. They’re trying to rebuild their structure with the new coach. I’ve been getting to know the coaching staff.”

Michigan and Michigan State have both recently gotten in contact with my coaches,” Reid said.

In his words

“I want to commit before my high school season,” Derrion Reid said.

“My mom is big on school, so education will be big for me. I want to study business and entrepreneurship. Location won’t really matter to me, but I will look at the playing style. I want to know the coaching like the back of my hand and have a good understanding with them. I’ll want to go somewhere I can make an immediate impact but still get better every day.

“I want to play in a structure but still have a coach that trusts his players and gives them the freedom to make plays. I don’t want to be a robot.”
