4-star David Castillo breaks down Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma State visits; talks process
David Castillo is the No. 27 player in the 2024 On3 Industry Ranking. Castillo has been a member of the USA Basketball U16 and U17 teams over the past two summers, helping each team go undefeated and win a gold medal.
“I’m an all-around point guard,” Castillo told On3. “I can create, shoot, do everything a point guard needs; I’m vocal. I’ve developed a lot with the mental side of my game. My school ball team didn’t do what we wanted, and I think going through that grew my mental and my approach to the game.”
On3 caught up with David Castillo after a live viewing at the USA Basketball Junior National Team minicamp to talk recruiting.
Castillo breaks down visits
“I’ve already taken official visits to Kansas, Oklahoma State, and Kansas State,” Castillo said.
Kansas State: “I talk with coach (Rodney) Perry almost every day and coach (Jerome) Tang when he can; our relationship has continued to grow since the visit. For them to call and continue to recruit me, no matter how busy they are, is a continued blessing.
“I saw Markquis (Nowell) this year and how they used all the guys on their roster, and I think I would fit in great there. They play with a lot of freedom and a lot of joy within the game. I thought it was very special what they were able to accomplish just in one season.”
Oklahoma State: “Just really getting to know the coaching staff and being around them was the best part of that visit for me. I think coach (Mike) Boynton is a great dude. They have a mainly all black coaching staff, along with coach (Keiton) Page. It was a great family environment.
They didn’t do as well as they wanted to this year, but they stuck through it and stayed together; that was good to see.”
Kansas: “I feel like I fit great with how they play. They’re the winningest program in the country, so for coach (Bill) Self to say I’m a priority for them is a great blessing. They play the right way, and so do I; I feel like I fit that system.
“Allen Fieldhouse stood out to me on the visit. It’s super loud there. The fans have so much joy and excitement for the players and for their team. It was a great feeling to see fans with such passion.”
Timeframes and visits
“I’m not sure what other visits I will take or the timeframe for when I will take them; I’ll most likely wait until after AAU,” David Castillo said. “I’m most likely planning on signing during the early period, so I’ll probably commit during my school year.
“It’s really just a lot of calling right now with the schools who have offered, and even some schools who haven’t offered. Gonzaga, coach (Chris) Beard at Ole Miss, and a couple of other schools that haven’t offered are talking with me. I’m really taking everything day by day right now.”
In Castillo’s words
“I want to play for a coach that believes in me and in my skills,” Castillo said. “I’ll also want to play for a coach I can sit down and talk with things outside of basketball. A coach I can trust on and off the court. I want to use basketball to build connections and not just take it for what it is. I’m trying to find the best fit for me, I would love to be the lead guard, but I wouldn’t mind playing with another guard in a two-guard lineup.
“Basketball is basketball, and if they play the right way, anything can happen.”
