4-star ATH Breantae Johnson hoping for Miami official visit: ‘My interest definitely went up a lot’

Fort Wayne (Ind.) four-star ATH Breantae “Tae” Johnson came to Miami in mid-May hoping to be impressed. He left hoping to schedule an official visit with the Hurricanes.

The 6-foot-3, 170-pound prospect and No. 143 overall recruit in the 2024 class had always had a basic level of interest in Miami, but he’s feeling different about the program after his May 13 weekend visit to Coral Gables with five-star receiver Mylan Graham.

Johnson felt it was important to visit Miami given its distance from Indiana and had “a good vibe, all around” throughout the visit. He largely interacted with receivers coach Kevin Beard and head coach Mario Cristobal along with a few off-field assistants and loved Miami’s environment.

The Hurricanes, who are recruiting Johnson at receiver, talked to the four-star about returning to Coral Gables this summer for an official visit but have not locked in anything. Beard told Johnson his possible official visit will depend on his overall level of interest in the Canes as his recruitment continues, and the staff is being cognizant of their official visit limit of 56.

Johnson said he’ll continue to communicate with Miami’s staff throughout the summer.

“I would say my interest definitely went up a lot,” Johnson said. “I know I can’t get down there a lot because it’s far from home, but my interest definitely went up a lot, and hopefully I can get back down there for an official and more.”

Johnson was thoroughly impressed by his interactions with Miami’s coaches and by the massive pool party at Cristobal’s house that featured more than a dozen other elite recruits, telling CaneSport “the people are what stood out.”

“I’d say it was just the vibe they gave us, the family-oriented vibe they gave us,” Johnson said. “It’s a family, for sure.”

The On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine lists Notre Dame as the current frontrunner to land Johnson ahead of Michigan State, Purdue and Tennessee.

CaneSport’s Take

Make no mistake Johnson is a great talent, but we’re seeing Miami have to restrict its official visitor list to players the Hurricanes a). know are serious about Miami and b). are unmistakable priority targets the staff knows it can land.

We’re reaching the stage of the recruiting cycle where the Hurricanes are determining which prospects they truly want to take in this recruiting class, and priority targets are being marked by official visits.

Expect June to be a massive recruiting month for the Canes.
