4 Miami commits the Hurricanes need to keep from flipping in 2024 class

We’ve talked previously about blue-chip targets Miami is trying to flip in the 2024 recruiting class, like No. 1 overall prospect and Ohio State commit Jeremiah Smith, five-star Georgie commit cornerback Ellis Robinson IV and four-star Florida State commit receiver Lawayne McCoy, but the Hurricanes have a few major commits they need to keep from flipping as well.
Here are four Miami commits the Hurricanes need to keep from flipping that have other programs pushing:
Joshisa Trader | Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna | 4-star WR, No. 34 overall recruit | 6-foot-0.5, 175 pounds
+++ Trader has long been one of the top receivers on Miami’s board along with Smith, his Five-Star Plus+ teammate at Chaminade, and the Hurricanes finally landed his commitment July 13. However, the No. 9 receiver in the 2024 class told CaneSport July 29 he plans to take official visits to Ohio State, Florida, Florida State and Tennessee this fall. Trader keeps in contact with all four coaching staffs as the respective programs attempt to pry him away from Coral Gables, but Miami fans should find some relief knowing he visited Miami more than any other program this summer. He worked out for the Canes’ staff in mid-June and returned for Miami’s end-of-summer recruiting barbecue the final weekend of July before the August dead period. Florida State was the only other program to receive a summer unofficial visit, and On3’s Chad Simmons previously reported Trader chose not to take summer official visits while his mother recovered from some health-related issues.
+++ With Miami only landing two receivers last year in four-star prospects Ray Ray Joseph and Robby Washington — and appearing to miss on Smith this season — Trader is a blue-chip talent the Hurricanes can’t let slip away in this cycle given the already-limited depth in Miami’s receiving corps. The Canes can’t afford to let another top-40 national prospect less than an hour from campus slip from their hands.
Chance Robinson, WR, Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas | 4-star WR, No. 112 national recruit | 6-foot-0.5, 205 pounds
+++ Robinson was Miami’s first four-star commit of this cycle when he announced his pledge at the Hurricanes’ April spring game, but it hasn’t stopped programs like Florida, Penn State and now Ohio State from targeting him. He took official visits to Florida and Penn State this summer and picked up an offer from the Buckeyes during the first week of August as OSU became the latest perennial powerhouse to make its push. Miami can’t afford to lose Robinson the same way it can’t afford to lose Trader, both from a receiver depth perspective and an image perspective. Robinson’s father told CaneSport he may visit Ohio State this fall and hopes Miami’s offense doesn’t struggle this season as it did last year, but the four-star wideout is still “all Canes.”
Artavius Jones, DL, Blountstown (Fla.) | 4-star DL, No. 167 national recruit | 6-foot-2, 285 pounds
+++ Florida State emerged as a possible threat for Jones when he took a midweek visit to Tallahassee during the final week of July, and he’s stopped shy of fully shutting down his recruitment as he continues “exploring” his options. Jones posted recently that he also received an offer from Kentucky as the Wildcats set themselves up for a possible push. Miami left the July 29 barbecue confident it had shored things up with Jones and avoided any possible threats, but the Canes will still monitor his recruitment closely. Assuming they both sign, Jones and three-star commit Daylen Russell will become the second and third defensive tackles Mario Cristobal has signed in his two full recruiting classes as Miami’s head coach.
Cam Pruitt, LB, Theodore (Al.) | 4-star LB, No. 400 national recruit | 6-foot-2, 185 pounds
+++ The Hurricanes were still facing competition for Pruitt before he received an Alabama offer following a workout for the Crimson Tide in late July, but Alabama is always a recruiting threat. The Tide snagged Miami priority center target Joseph Ionata earlier this spring (a prospect I projected to Miami) before his chance for his Hurricanes official visit, but unlike Ionata, Miami still appears to be in good shape with Pruitt. He told CaneSport at Miami’s recruit barbecue he is still committed and would need Alabama to show him what it can offer that the Hurricanes can’t. He said he returned for the barbecue to show he is still committed to Miami.
