3-star WR Trey Horne considering summer return to NC State
Trey Horne’s recruitment has looks completely different than it did six months ago. Before an avalanche of power-five offers began late last year, he was sending his film to coaches and hoping for an opportunity.
Going into the summer, he holds scholarships from NC State, Florida, Florida State, Virginia Tech and 18 others.
“It was completely life changing,” Horne said.
Now, all it takes is a phone call with a coach before an offer often follows quickly. A position switch to receiver and a dominant junior season helped transform his college football future.
The former quarterback ran a 40-yard-dash in the 4.3’s, which piqued his interest in his potential pass-catching abilities.
“I started training at receiver and stuck with it and fell in love with it,” Horne said.
His junior season at Rabun Gap-Nacoochee (Ga.) School included 57 carries for 532 yards, 47 catches for 772 yards and 21 total touchdowns.
NC State wide receivers coach Joker Phillips began prioritizing the 6-3 athlete after offering him Feb. 22. He visited the school May 5— a little over a month after Horne’s April 1 trip to Raleigh.
Following that unofficial visit, the receiver raved about the Wolfpack in a previous interview with TheWolfpacker.com, sharing that the program was definitely one of his top-five schools at the time.
He does not have an official visit date set yet but did say he is considering a trip back to campus in June. Florida, Wake Forest, Kentucky, Florida State and Georgia Tech are all involved here as well.
Phillips spent part of the receiver’s initial trip to campus breaking down what life would be like with the Pack.
“He basically told me about his philosophy, how he coaches his guys,” Horne said. “He told me what a normal day would be like, he told me how he likes his reps to be run and how he releases.”
NC State has continued to make him a priority after that trip, and Horne said head coach Dave Doeren is also taking a personal role in his recruitment and recently reached out for a phone call.
“He just asked me about my visit, said he hoped I enjoyed it and hopes to get me back, and we talked about maybe setting up something here this summer too,” Horne said.
When he returns to campus, Horne wants to watch the team practice and check out the overall culture of the program.
“I want to see the players interact with the coaches and how the players interact and just see how everybody gets along and get a vibe of how everything is there,” Horne said.
On3 considers Horne the No. 30 athlete in the nation and the No. 85 recruit in Georgia. Florida leads his Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM) at 36.8 percent.
